Sorry, I haven't really been able to find the answers to these particular questions I have about Mythbuntu.

First, the requirements on the mythbuntu say that a tv tuner card is a requirement. However, I have DirecTv + PVRs, so I really don't need the recording/playback capabilities of a Myth setup.

Second, my Fedora-soon-to-be-Heron box doesn't have a tv-out port. It's currently connected to my living room LCD via the VGA port on the integrated Intel graphics. I could get a cheap vid card for it if needed, but it's a small Shuttle-type system with limited expandability.

All I really want from the system is to be able to play DVDs and my Divx movies, and play music.

Thanks

In the capture card setup, you can specify a pvr/set top box through firewire I believe. I know that it can also be done via USB, but am not sure of how. This will allow you to record whatever is coming out of the box in mpeg2 format. You will still need to get an IR blaster or something like, to get the Mythbox to change the channel on the set-top.

Keep the VGA, as it should do quite fine for telly watching. The sole exception is that you might want to make sure that all of the low cpu settings are used, as your cpu will be doing any encoding/decoding\, instead of a dedicated chip in your video card or capture card.

All I really want from the system is to be able to play DVDs and my Divx movies, and play music.

Thanks

I hope this helps

Thanks for the tips. Just for clarity's sake tho, Mythbuntu doesn't absolutely *have* to have a tuner, right? I mean, I'm quiet happy with the job the DireTV PVR is doing, so that's functionality I don't need from Mythbuntu.

And I'm glad to know that I can keep the VGA connection as well. The Fedora system wouldn't run anything higher than 640x480, rendering Gnome completely useless. I know I could've fiddled around with some of the X configs, but there were other issues about Fedora I didn't like, and I enjoyed my past experiences with Ubuntu.

Like I said, I really just want something that'll organize and play my DVDs (on disk and on iso), along with Divx movies and music.

This works fine... I've used my system for some time that way.

Yeh works perfectly that way.
