Hi. I have had only 8 months with Linux and me and my friend decided to make a Linux distro based off of Ubuntu. Small problem though, I'm only 12 years old. Since this dream is not even close to being a reality I am reaching out for help. If any one would like to help I would be happy, very happy to have you. Oh and by the way if you think that you need to explain technical stuff simple to me you dont have to believe me I know what it means

What do you want this particular distro to do?

We wanted it to be a multimedia distribution, but I'm flexible. We really just want it to be easy for our first release, then later on we can add on and so on. Yes I have heard of remastersys, but never actually used it. We want to use Enlightenment and GNOME, however I still would like to be as easy as possible for the first release.

Use remastersys and check out http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/e17/ for getting the latest Enlightenment.

Thanks. Just out of curiosity is it possible to change the default window manager in e17 to Compiz, or would that cause major damage to the desktop environment?

I don't think would work in any stable way.

Ok. Thanks again for that. I have one more question. Is there any other dock that will work in e17 besides engage. Lately when I try to install it is says that the gadget is not a valid gadget.

I don't know. I really don't _think_ any will, but develop happens so fast nowadays I could be wrong. A quick google search reveals no immediate answers except in the negative.

I did the search on Google and Engage is the only one that will work. I got it working though so... **Change** Engage does not come with upgrades, so now I am trying to get iTask NG running but I can't get it installed. it comes in the tar.gz package and in the eight months that I've used Linux, never have used the tar.gz packages. I have always used .deb's so I might need step by step instructions. That would be so helpful. Thanks.

Open the archive with GUI or:

tar -xvvzf foo.tar.gz

Read the instrutions that are in it.

Sadly there are no instructions in it. Is there any way to make a .deb from the tar.gz without the complicated terminal commands?

Where did you download this? Give me a link.

There are no complicated terminal commands involved.

Hello! I'm 13. This is a nice, fun project but you need to think about how you're going to go about this.

Are you going to build off a major distribution so you have access to its repositories for software? If so, will you use its native package manager, make your own, or port a different manager to it? If not, how will you make software installation easy or will everything need to be compiled (or, like Gentoo, will most things be compiled even though there is a package manager, for optimisation?)? Will it have a custom kernel, standard kernel, or generic real-time kernel? What type of multimedia is it focussed towards: creation or playback? Furthermore, is that creation/playback centered on audio, video, still images or a mixture?

It's a lot to think about. But I look forward to seeing your progress. :)

To answer all of your questions, we are building off of Ubuntu, we are going to use Synaptic, it will have a generic real-time kernel. It is focused on creation AND playback and it is centered on audio, photos, and video.:lolflag:

I have a question for all of you. When I use remastersys, I boot the Live CD and dont get the changes I made. For example I make the screen look like this http://image.wetpaint.com/image/1/46379s8RbCKrsgT44DS-Mg705928/GW763
But when I go to the Live CD, all I get is a brown screen and an older panel look of the panel. Help?
PS: I would have posted a picture but I don't have one at the moment.

Perhaps remastersys doesn't save GNOME settings? I'm not familiar with the program, but I guess that's possible... :?

What is everyones opinion on LXDE? I think its nice and lightweight, but I would like to know someone else's opinion.

It's OK. I prefer IceWM for that functionality.
