This is probably a very stupid question to you all but I wonder if you can help me?

I have a new laptop which is configired to UK but there are keys that display a different symbol. e.g. above the number 2 should be the" but when I press it is shows the @.

Also the pound sign shows a #.

Can someone tell me how I change these??? P L E A SSSSSSS E

Sounds to me like your keyboard layout is coming up as US.

go to System -> preferences -> keyboard and check what layout it is using.

you can also add a different layout there too if you need to change it

hope this helps

Should be a menu across the top of the screen...

Is it a brand new laptop? Are you running Ubuntu or Windows?

Having read some of the postings I am frightened to say...Windows and yes it is a new laptop.

System is in the upper left top of your screen.

Edit: Disregard this, as you're running windows not Ubuntu.

I have icons on the screen and I have gone into My Computer then into control panel and then keyboard but it does not let me do anything else.

You guys must think I am really stupid!

ahh ok :D This is an Ubuntu Linux forum, so not a lot of people here use windows that much. But I shall try and help.

Firstly are you using windows XP or Vista.

On XP if you click on the start menu and then go to Control Panel you should see an icon for "Date Time Language and Regional Settings" or something along those lines.

You should then be able to click "add other languages" and a box will pop up, that will say something about input languages. If you click details and then you should be able to set your default Input language to English (United Kingdom).

I hope this helps, unfortunately it might be a little innacurate as I'm typing this from memory.

Also where did you get your laptop from? because that sort of basic configuration should have been done in the shop!

hope this helps

Not at all :D, bizarrely the keyboard language settings in windows are in Regional and Language settings rather than keyboard.

seems a little backwards to me but whatever :)

I am sorry I did not realise what Ubuntu was I thought it was a help forum.

Anyway the language is set to UK and I still have the problem.

Any other ideas?

I'm sorry, but if that didn't work then I don't know what else to try. I suggest posting your question here

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=194

they should be able to help you more than us Linux geeks can ;)
