I've actually got a couple of questions.

First, I'd like to know if there is any good software out there to help me learn guitar... I'm pretty close to a complete newbie, but would like to learn. I've had people give me a few recommendations, but they were windows based and I'd rather just stick with something that will run in Linux. (or if you have any advice on other ways to learn, videos, etc... I just want to make sure I have a good foundation to build on before I push myself further too fast and end up having to relearn stuff).

Second, and less importantly, I thought it would be cool if there is some software out there that could synthesize the sounds of a guitar. I'd rather learn to play myself, but think that would be cool to mess around on anyway.

Also, just as an afterthought, would either of these type of programs be included in Ubuntu Studio?

I really appreciate any help here.

I'd recommend taking lessons, especially if guitar is your first instrument.

I can kind of play piano. I took lessons when I was younger... don't have anything to practice with, so I don't do much with that, but if I sit down with a keyboard for a while it starts coming back.

So I guess I wouldn't say guitar is my first instrument, but I would still love to take lessons, I just think if I can find a good DIY way that will be a lot easier to fit into my hectic life... probably cheaper too, but time is more of a concern. I've got plenty of time to practice, but it's not consistently at the same time, so it would be hard to schedule a lesson.

And Frets on Fire, does look like it might be fun to play around with, but I'm not sure how helpful it would be lol.

Go get a Guitar World magazine and learn some songs from there. Go get a music book from a book store. Look for something called the "Guitar White Pages". It has tons of varied songs in tab format. There are tons of beginner's guides all over the internet and in your local library. Talk to friends. Ask questions. Get a month of lessons to square away the basics. Get a keyboard and find notes on both instruments. Compare chords. Build bridges between what you know and what you're trying to learn.

Try Tux Guitar : http://www.tuxguitar.com.ar/

it's really awesome 'cause it's really "Guitar Pro" for Linux , and it plays the *.gp3 , *.gp4 and *.gp5 format as well , so go into
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/
search for some "exercise" or "lesson" tabs and search them by "Guitar Pro" format , then open in Tux Guitar and feel the groove :)
have fuN :)
