Laggy ubuntu - Lenovo R61, nVidia Quadro

I would be glad if someone could help me out with my sluggy ubuntu...

Lenovo R61
Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 2.1Ghz
2 GB RAM
nVidia Quadro NVS 140m 128MB
160GB HD

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy

nVidia 169.12 driver installed via Envy

Problem: ubuntu is laggy, random stutters, scrolling/browsing is laggy...

When typing "top" command in terminal I can see that Xorg uses up to 60% CPU when the system stutters.

Ive already searched a lot in this and other forums but cant find any solution. Please help!

I also have an R61 and although not video specs (integrated graphics) as yours I found that System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects > None helped a lot. May be OT but this fixed left click problem on mouse and video speed when using GoogleEarth.
