Hello everybody.
I recently learned about CrunchBang (http://crunchbang.org/projects/linux/).
It is based on ubuntu and uses openbox window manager. It seems to be
very light.
Any feedbacks on this? Has anyone used it on an old computer?

Yeah, the guy chose a really awkward way to say the usual "no guaranties"! It doesn't seem his trying to make his distro very popular

well it does look good in the screen shots, but i think most people are shooting for a stable distro right off the back, not that any distro is truly stable, i think they all have little quirks. i do think it could benefit some of the new who don't want to start from command and do there own or people who just want a similar system fast. i would give it a try if i was still looking around, but i'm pretty set on debian and got mine just about right, i'm down to tweaking the fonts, setting up the servers, etc...
just don't feel like using anything else. :(

Yes I know. Actually I think it was you that we were talking about minimal installations, light window managers etc, so If I remember right this one should be heavy in front of your debian!
Also, people who want to use such WMs, are usually a bit more experienced so they tend to prefer some DIY anyway.. ..but I don't know.

it's live cd, give it a shot, let us know how it goes. i would but i don't have my own burner, i have to download the iso move it to usb, then bribe someone to burn it for me, which i would then owe them a favor down the line. just to much trouble, i'm waiting till i get a new rig.

Gee, I ran out of empty CD-Rs!
I bought some yogurt today so I ain't taking another 2min walk to the supermarket in one single day!
If I just copy/paste the contents of the iso on a USB stick and tell the bios to boot from it, will it run as a live CD?

VirtualBox (a free virtual machine) lets you install OS's from an ISO which has not been burned to CD! The's debs on Sun's site (yes I'm too lazy to link to it :P)

virtualbox is to slow on my rig, i only got 450mhz 256mb ram. it's like a slide show, if i only had video acceleration(3d), but it's a paltry 2.5m neomagic. :(

Usually there's a bit of fiddling with casper involved, but it's not too difficult. Check out the info here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick) and at pendrivelinux.com and you should get the idea.

Kalispera!
Neat! Well that maybe answers to another unrelated (and unanswered) question I posted recently; Can I make a multibootable environment on a USB stick (using syslinux maybe)? I had in mind a USB stick with puppylinux+gparted+clonezilla for example..
I guess this can happen as this is what many Linux magazines do with their DVDs. They have a grub loader where you can choose among the live distributions offered in the DVD.

No wonder it's so slow! You'll need at least 512 MB of memory to run another operating system at the same time. But only at 1 GB does it actually become usable...

Geia sou file :)
Sure, you can do this. There are plenty of relevant guides around - I already mentioned pendrivelinux.com which has a guide for Puppy Linux (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2006/03/25/puppy-linux-on-usb/) - it's actually easier to run that off a USB stick than Ubuntu.

if it were based on debian i'd use it, i don't like the 6 month release cycle, is there a debian version? i can probably work that out. there's an ubuntu search engine on that site though!
