Blinking cursor at start up after installing

Hey yall,

Complete newbie here. Don't know much. Installed 8.04 on my Dell optiplex 320 within XP. Partitioned 15 GB for ubuntu and installed, exjected cd, rebooted. I get the screen that asks if I want to boot into XP or Ubuntu. When i choose ubuntu i get the Blinking cursor in the top left and nothing happens. i get the same thing when I try to boot directly from the CD. I tried safemode. didnt work. Any ideas? Here is my setup.

Optiplex 320
1.60 P4
2GB RAM
21" westgate screen
ATI Raedeon Xpress 1100
80 ATA hdd

Help the newbie have a ubuntu party before he goes to sleep!

Just want to say that I have the same problem - trying to get a dual-boot XP/Ubuntu machine but Ubuntu gives just a blinking cursor. I have tried with Wubi and with a Live CD; same results.

My machine is a used eMachines T2484 with a new Seagate PATA hard drive. It also has a non-standard nVidia video card, but removing that card and using the built-in video makes no difference.

I had installed Wubi successfully on a previous computer.
