I've been using Ubuntu for about two years, but for the past several weeks I've been traveling, staying at motels, campgrounds and friends' houses.

About 50 - 75% of the time, I connect no problem. Sometimes it's regular old "free wifi," sometimes it's one where you have to accept their terms of service and sometimes it's one where you need a password (all still free). There doesn't seem to be a certain type of wifi that does or doesn't work. It seems pretty random, but I'm betting it's not.

So what gives? At first I thought that the goofy people at campgrounds don't know how to set up Wifi. And while that might be true (one guy told me my transmitter was probably bad -hehe), I know that's not the real reason.

I use network manger on a Sony Vaio VGN-C190G. And I'm using Hardy.. not sure if I had the problem before that, I really didn't test it like I am now - different wifi connection each day.

Can anyone shed some light on the subject?
