Hi!
See the mockup (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=81502). If we could blur the shadow from the icon-text, the text should become more readable.

I actually found the text on the left looking better :o
The one on the right, while standing out more, had the jaggies (antialiasing problem?)

Couldn't you just change the Desktop font to Sans Bold? That makes it a lot easier to read...

It's easier, but still hard.
I don't think, it is so complicate to implement this in GNOME.
