i was just trying to add pidgin to startup using system>preferences>sessions
but where it says commands i tried to browse for the program but had no idea where to look

where do i find the launcher for the program/ what folder are programs stored in (if any).

You don't need the full path to launch it. Just the name of the package will do, so for Pidgin just put "pidgin" (no quotes) in that field. The system is clever enough to do the rest.
