View Full Version : [kubuntu] [SOLVED] Kubuntu 8.04 LTS boots extremely slow at "Reading files needed to boot"

Hi!

I have a clean install of Kubuntu 8.04 (KDE 3.5.9) (32 bit) on an Intel P4 (1.7GHz), 256 MB RAM desktop system with a native 1024x768 resolution monitor. Everything was working fine, until a few days ago when I installed a couple of updates. After that, my boot-up has gone painfully slow (in excess of 4 minutes - from hitting enter at GRUB to the KDM login screen). Normally this time would be around 1-2 minutes max.

I looked around and found a couple of bugs on launchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/197228 & https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/29321 (related to clocksource=hpet). Unfortunately, adding clocksource=hpet to my kernel line hasn't helped at all.

After removing 'quiet' and 'splash' from my kernel lines, I noticed that most of the delay happens at the "Reading files needed to boot" stage. It takes nearly 2 minutes!

Attached is the default settings bootchart.
