Ok I just need to know one thing. I was on www.gnome-look.org and was wondering which themes do i need to down load for hardy. They have gtk 1.x and gtk2.x . So which one do I go to get a them for hardy?

well it depends which part of hardy you are trying to re-theme. gnome-look has themes for many parts of the OS: boot splashes, emerald themes, desktop backgrounds as well as many others.

I am trying to change the look of ubuntu.

If I am not mistaken the gtk (gtk 2 to answer your original question) theme will change the widgets used in the windows, like the buttons, scrollbars etc. Metacity themes will change the window borders.
Generally all you do is download the theme, open system>preferences>appearance and drag the downloaded theme into that window to install.
