Hotlinking is when you get the image address from one website and post it as an inline image on another website. it is generally frowned upon by many, though some allow it.

Hot linking is linking directly to a source file.

Generally done with images.

Lets say there was an image located at (making a bogus adress):

http://www.SomeNonExistantSite.com/pictureOneLikes.jpg

Now if one used that link in one's img tag one would be hotlinking to that website, grabbing the image from them, using their bandwidth to dispay the picture on one's page. NOT COOL.

If one wants to steal/borrow an image from someone elses website, at least one should do them the mercy of downloading the image, and then uploading it to a free image hosting service, or hosting it on one's own server, thereby not adding an insult to an injury by asking them to host the image one took from them to begin with.
