I was attempting a clean install from a live CD (so I wiped out my 6.06 partitions (/boot and / ) but after reformatting it ended due to a CD error.

I can't burn (don't have burner at home) another CD until I get to work.

But I have a good 7.04 and good 6.06 live CDs.

What should I do to get up and running ASAP?
a.) install 7.04 then upgrade to 8.04
b.) install 6.06 and upgrade to 8.04

If you can wait, just burn a 8.04 CD when you can - less potential cause for trouble. If you feel you must start now, it shouldn't matter bug-wise which one you pick, but you may have to go from 7.04 to 7.10 to 8.04.

Always burn the ISOs at the slowest write speed, I've found that the live cd's are prone to errors at higher speeds.

You could do 7.04, but that would take a lot of time to do. If you do, make sure you install the distro upgrade and not the 7.04 upgrades. There should be significantly more than 100 there, and that would waste a lot of time.

But the easier, quicker, and probably less likely to have problems is to just wait and burn another copy.

I think I'll wait. Thanks everyone!

You have choices :

1. burn Hardy live CD
2. burn Hardy alternate CD
3. install Dapper and directly upgrade to Hardy

For upgrade from Dapper to Hardy look here. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades?highlight=%28CategoryDocumentation%2 9)

Issue resolved! New live cd worked perfectly.
It was burned exactly the same way as the first (16X roxio creator classic on work pc running XP), must of have been some rare mishap with the cd or whatever.
