That would depend greatly on his hard drive. His RAM and CPU are fast enough; his HD would be the only bottleneck.

the truth is in da sig.. just bought this laptop 2 days ago.. well i guess technically 3 now lol.. installed dual boot ubuntu 8.10 on the first day & have been mysteriously stuck on the linux side lol

no complaints at all.. this laptop was a bargain at $600.. i'm not a pc gamer so the nvidia geforce 8200 is just fine.. it supports 3D acceleration, great digital audio/vid through hdmi, sweet 16" screen & built in webcam.. it works smoothly even in clunky vista but it's total smooth sailing in ubuntu :D

okay, what do i still have?

my main laptop: hp pavilion dv9500 (turion x2, 3GB RAM, nvidia-graphic)
my netbook: asus eee 701
my primary desktop: sun ultra 10 (1GB RAM, 450 MHz ultrasparc II processor)
my secondary desktop: powermac G4 (2*450 MHz, 768 MB RAM)
my tertiary desktop: sgi indy R4400 (133 MHz, 256 MB RAM)

the stuff i've just given to friends at the LUG cos i'm moving house:
Athlon64-3000 (1GB RAM)
Compaq alphastation (500 MHz, 2GB RAM)
HP C3750 (Parisc architecture, 900 MHz, 2GB RAM)
Sun Blade 1000 (1*750 MHz Ultrasparc III, 2GB RAM)

so i'm down to 5 different architectures, 2 of which are really boring :(

oh, and i have a motorola A780 with an xscale processor. i'll be trying to install debian on it this week :-D

I'm using an off the shell Packard Bell (I think iMedia 5020, not sure).

It has some Intel dual core in it running at 3Ghz.

Some crappy onboard ATI graphics card and I upped the ram to 2gb.

Has a 250gb HDD.

I do like the nice 22 inch widescreen monitor (Samsung SyncMaster T220) standing next to it.

:p

The netbook (asus eeepc 900) has some Intel Celeron cpu @ 900Mhz, 1gb of ram and two 4gb SSDs.

My old laptop, an HP pavilion dv4000 has 1gb of ram, runs some crappy mobile Intel cpu a less than two Ghz, with onboard intel graphics card. That one can't stay on for more than 15 minutes before it dies (has been to the factory twice).

Just got a new desktop for Linux the other day. Well thrilled with it too. It's an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200, with 3Gb RAM and an Nvidia 9800GT 512Mb. It's really fantastic, but I can't decide whether to go for the 64 bit Ubuntu or stick with 32 bit. I'm sure I read somewhere that it was only worth it if you had 4Gb RAM or more.

I'm keeping an eye out for some new games to push this thing too! I know Prey has a Linux install now, and if anyone here can recommend some others to try out that'd be great. I don't go for multiplayer online games though - just single player ones. Thanks.

ThinkPads have been my main computer for years. Little did I know in the very beginning that I would end up using Ubuntu Linux on them all. So for me, the perfect combination now, is Ubuntu & a ThinkPad.

in my sig.

Working on a custom water block at work right now. So that should be in by the end of the week cause we have cnc's at work hehe. So we can make stuff better then what you can buy :).

plus the copper only cost me 10 bucks for some spare copper we had around the shop machine time is free after hours.

We already made one for my buddy works awesome. The prototype were making for me has copper pins that come straight threw to the cpu so they make direct contact with the cpu to allow heat to escape faster. Also no flow restriction which is the biggest problem with store bought water blocks :)
OWNAGE

yeah i know older machine but i wouldn't be making it if it wasn't for having the equipment infront of me to make it for next to nothing.

HDD: 60GB Western Digital (primary), 30GB Maxtor (secondary), 20GB Maxtor (unpowered secondary)
CD-ROM: Generic Samsung, maybe Sony CD-ROM drive (replacement for broken one)
CD-RW: HP CD-Writer Plus
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6200
Sound Card: Creative Labs SB Audigy
FireWire: Creative Labs SB Audigy FireWire port (...what? Why is there a FireWire port on a sound card?)
Alternate, Unused Sound Card: Integrated with MSI motherboard
Ethernet Controller: ADMTek NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 (not used for now)
Speakers: Genica Hi-Fi Speakers
Mouse: Logitech M-BJ58/M-BJ69 Optical Wheel Mouse
Gamepads: Logitech Dual Action Gamepad, Interact ProPad 8 Digital
Keyboard: Logitech Access Keyboard
Backup Keyboard: Dynex USB Internet Keyboard

Yeah, it was a good gaming computer... About 5-6 years ago.. Oh well, it plays OpenArena, Tremulous, and Urban Terror, all with maxed out graphics (:

$453 Computer to Save For:
CPU: Intel Celeron Dual Core 2 GHz
RAM: 4 1GB RAM Sticks (4GB in all)
HDD: 1.5 Terabyte Seagate Barracuda (primary), 320 GB Western Digital Caviar (secondary), maybe more but that depends on the HD connections with CD drives
DVD-RW: Sony DVD/CD Rewritable IDE Retail Drive
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 (can't wait!!)
Sound Card: Onboard motherboard sound, but possibly a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy, but that's probably not worth the trouble
FireWire: N/A
Ethernet Controller: Same as in meh old PC, what's the difference?
Wireless Access: Netgear USB 2.0 Wireless Adapter
Speakers: Logitech USB Digital Speakers
Mouse: Same, but I'll eventually get a new one (:
Keyboard: Same, I love this keyboard
Gamepads: Same
Motherboard: ASUS P5QL PRO Motherboard (again, can't wait)

It's hard to believe that I'm going to get that awesome PC for $453... That's just a little more than the XBOX I'm saving for (:

Oh, operating systems:
Default and new PC:
Kubuntu 8.10--->
MAYBE Windows XP, it gets the Blue Screen of Death when I try to install it on my default PC :(
And no, it's after the disc part - usually when it gets to Installing Devices... it gets the screen. I mainly just tried to install it for Quake LIVE and other games, then I realized there's no point, so I formatted the drive I was installing Windows on back to ext3 and now it's a backup drive for my Kubuntu 8.10 again.

EDIT: I would dual boot between Kubuntu and Windows, if I ever installed Windows again.

Browsers:
Default and new PC:
Firefox. Always. Except sometimes I decide to randomly switch to Opera, and then go back to Firefox after a few days (one time it was a mere hour o_O)

Anyway, if you see any possible Linux-related issues with the hardware on the new PC (I'm mainly wondering about the USB speakers..), PLEASE PM me. I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm trying to move away from MS. I have three problems when I get them fixed Ubuntu will be my primary OS. So far I haven't been able to get the Nvidia 180 drivers to load. I have reloaded a least at a dozen times
trying. I have a Hauppauge 1800 tuner can't get it to work either. I have MythBuntu 9.04 loaded on a seperate HD om my wifes PC, cann't get it to network with mine. I have only worked on this a little. But for more people to use this system simple netwroiking needs to work out ot the box.

Thats my main computer, I own all the cpu's listedin the poll though, and all but the VIA get used heavily.

Blacklightbulb
June 30th, 2009, 05:37 AM
AMD AthlonXp 2100+ (1.8GHz) over-clocked to 3000+(2.21GHz)
Nvidia GeForce 5200 (I think I once overclocked it too by a little bit though) 128MB
Crappy temporary 80 GB hardrive after my 160GB died
1024 + 256 MB RAM

AMD is awesome it's cheap, fast, and although models are 1 month after intel they tend to perform better. Also they are more efficeint and highly upgradeable 1.8 - 2.21 (+4.21)GHz

The computer I'm using now is a Compaq Evo D500 SFF on roids:
Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.5GHz
1.5GB PC133 SDRAM
nVidia GeForce 6200 LP w/ 256MB DDR on AGP 4x/8x
80GB PATA WD HDD (Western Digital)
Sony CD/DVD-ROM PATA
Dualboots Windows XP Pro SP3 and Ubuntu 8.10

My other rig, which is stuck in Kalamazoo:
MSI K9N Neo Rev-F Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
3GB DDR2 PC5300
BFG Tech GeForce 8600GTS OC w/ 256MB GDDR3
250GB SATA HDD (Western Digital)
320GB SATA HDD (Western Digital)
Samsung CD/DVD-RW SATA
All neatly tucked away inside of an Antec NSK 4480
Dualboots between XP Pro SP3 and Ubuntu 8.10

And then my pathetic laptop..
HP Omnibook XE3-GF
Intel Celeron 933
512MB PC133 SDRAM
10GB HDD
Boots Ubuntu 8.10

Also, I use Firefox as my primary web browser, since I think that was asked.

If I were to list all of my computers, we'd be here all day...and this is likely already in the top five longest threads in the entire forum...so I'll only list one here, and toss in a link to where I've already listed a couple others. :p

Dell Latitude C600
14.1" TFT Active Matrix LCD Monitor
4MB ATI Rage Mobility M3, using the r128 driver.
850/700MHz Pentium 3, usually kept set to the lower speed.
256 MB PC100
4GB or 20GB hard drive, depending on what I'm working on.
1 USB 1.1 port
3com ethernet and WinModem.
ESS Maestro 3i sound system.

Current OS: Debian Squeeze + Lenny-Backports (Squeeze doesn't seem to have OpenOffice 3 yet), with a few parts custom-optimized for my CPU.

Browser: w3m with the image extension, or Iceweasel 3.0.9.

For the rest, see http://mulenmar.wordpress.com/hardware/

From watching these diagrams (http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=797&pageid=6) from DriverHeaven.Net, your system would benefit more from an nVidia card.

Alright. I'll bite...

I just updated my computer after using the same box for over 5 years.

Formerly a HUGE AMD fan, I have now come to realize that intel momentarily have the lead.

My recently retired system was an AMD Athlon64 2000+ (Socket 754) on an Nforce3 board. One of the primary drivers to upgrade was nvidias lack of support for the nforce3 chipset.

What I upgraded to now:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2607/3702488800_41b04d1f33_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattlach/3702488800/)

(It's weird to see 8 logical CPU's up there)

I got one of those compact shuttle cases designed for the new Intel Core i7 architecture. I got the cheapest one, the 920. Eventually I will overclock it, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

The ram is triple channel, so I have 6GB of ram (a 1600 2 gig stick on each channel)

So its a quad core CPU, with hyperthreading, so each core acts as two logical processors.

I didn't bother with a fancy graphics card, as I don't play games anymore, so I got one of the budget Nvidia cards, the 9400GT.

And - of course - I'm running it on 64bit Ubuntu :p

Thats mine. It works pretty well for what I do.

I have too many computers.

The one I'm using right now (my primary work computer, which i actually own) is a Kentsfield Core 2 Quad which I built out of one of those TigerDirect DIY bundles. Decent ATI video, 4GB of RAM (64-bit, of course) and a nice orange sticker that says "DEFECTIVE PART" (which is also the hostname)

Work tends to buy Dells (which sucks, imho) and at home I have a StinkPad x30 and an IdeaPad S9e and a few other laptops and desktops that are mostly for parts or experimentation.

Oh, and a MacBook which hasn't been turned on in three months. :p

Currently my fastest computer, the one I use day to day, is a 3Ghz, Dual Core Intel CPU.

So, I voted the poll as Intel, but traditionally I have been an AMD guy. (Not so you would notice...) The project on the bench is an Intel cpu based motherboard cause it was $15 from Fry's.

But that little home-brew will likely find another home somewhere, my next personal upgrade will likely be a Dual or Quad Core AMD.

The various choices though, dizzying.

Dell Latitude D630 laptop :/ ..... I am forced to lease it because of the university program I am in.

First day I got it, I partitioned the drive and put ubuntu on it.

I would have outright deleted windows and all the software in windows.. buuuutttt... then there would be certain tests I would not be allowed to write, assignments I couldn't complete etc.
