I see many PC's running w/ more than 2gb RAM. My current machine has 2gb.
Do you see much gain going to 3 or 4gb RAM?

My main computer is an HP Pavilion AthlonXP 3200+, with an nvidia 6200LE video card. Works out of the box with the nvidia drivers and totally rock solid. I'll probably increase the memory from 512MB to 1GB at some point, but it's my workhorse computer.
My accessory computer is an ACER Athlon 64 3500+ with a GeForce 8600GT video card. This computer didn't work with an nvidia 6200LE PCI-e card, but after a fresh install works fine with the 8600GT! :-)

Its a Dell Inspiron D530 with Unbuntu.
The second computer is a bare bones with a dead motherboard.
It will get a new MB and be the stable one, while the Dell is for Linux distro hopping.

Now I have a Athlon 64-bit dual core with 1 GB RAM, 250 HD, NVidia 8500GT (256 RAM).
Ubuntu is very very happy with it, and I installed XP in dual boot for some games.
Needless to say, XP gets turned on maybe twice a month, has no internet access, no security updates, no antivirus and no firewall...

My laptop's a Latitude D600, Pentium M 1.6GHz, 1.25GB RAM, 60GB 7200RPM Seagate HD. Atheros G wireless and Dell's internal USB Bluetooth adapter. I've also got a D/Port dock that works very nicely, even undocks on the fly, though the laptop's touchpad forgets its settings when I do that. Firefox is the browser of choice. I also use VirtualBox for the rare occasion that I need something XP-specific, like testing something out. I also occasionally use the latest that WineHQ has to offer, and sometimes even ies4linux.
It's running Ubuntu Gutsy very nicely, except for the fact that FGLRX won't support my FireGL R250/Mobile Radeon 9000, so I can't do Compiz without losing the right 1/3 of my 1400/1050 screen...
Server:
Dimension 2350, Celeron 2GHz, 768MB RAM, 80gig WD and 400gig Seagate drives. It's my MythTV server, netboot server for my MythTV diskless frontend with dnsmasq, and has my CD and DVD burners. 1x Hauppauge PVR500MCE, 1x Hauppauge PVR250MCE. Running Ubuntu Gutsy server.
MythTV frontend:
Ubuntu Gutsy. Did I mention it's diskless? Athlon XP 2400+, 512MB RAM, Asus V8440Ti GF4 4400 running proprietary drivers, DVD drive is the only mechanical device in there, other than the fans. PXE booting and NFS root rock!!

sageb1-desktop: 256 MB HP e-Vectra pn:2124T running at 733 MHz originally with stock Matsushita CD-ROM and Maxtor 20GB HD (but original RAM was 128MB), using i810e motherboard. Comes with USB Version 1.1 (2 ports], ac97 sound, serial (1) and parallel (1) ports, and 3Com PCI 3c905C Tornado NIC. Powered by external 19VDC PSU with power cable.
This machine was bought circa October 2004 for about $250 from a commercial Winblows computer pimp dealing in a lot of sluts trained by different brothels like HP, IBM, etc. :guitar:
I originally bought it because I was sold on Intel i810 motherboards as it integrated the 440BX chipset into the 810 chipset, reducing parts count.
However, I discovered from reading the LinuxBIOS documentation that ANY PROBLEMS arising from using motherboards based on the i810 design, including motherboards based on the i915 series, will have their inner workings embargoed by Intel i.e. Intel will not let information about how the chipset(s) handle the hardware pass freely into Linux developers' hands.
Instead, they follow the Microslut business policy of extorting from said developers $money$ in order to "buy into" a Shared Source plan i.e. they do not share source for free.
Thus it appears we need to get Intel's competition on the Ubuntu bandwagon (eg AMD, AMI, Motorola, nVidia etc.) in order to get them to "play ball" with the developers of Linux device drivers, thus freeing the software accordingly.
Or not.
So in essence HP pimped me a Intelslut inside their e-Vectra.:guitar:
My second box is an Intel motherboard with a 700 MHw PII cpu, Maxtrox video, SB16 compatible soundcard, generic 10/100 NIC (possibly Intel) with 2 USB Version 1.1 ports, COM1 and COM2 serial ports, 1 parallel printer port, and at least 300 Watt PSU.
This box is a Microslut I bought from a Winblows pimp for about $120. :guitar:
I feel like a john who's been hosed over by a sleasy bunch of 'ho's, pimps, and madams from fancy brothels (like Gateway and Best Buy). :p

Looks identical... once measured, marked, measured & marked again, then finally cut. ;)
Akasa Paxmate really is the cheaper option. I would have got the real deal if it were available, it was out of stock everywhere.
I remember you recommending the AcoustiPak, it's the small details like that which make all the difference, thank you :)

Yeah i got the wireless one on the bottom shelf first but in XP i would burn through batteries fast and the performance sucked. sometimes the mouse would stop working and sometimes the keyboard. So i went and bought a wired set, then i discovered linux and since i had an extra keyboard and mouse i decided to resurrect a computer from some old parts and the linux computer was built. Funny that the wireless keyboard and mouse work a lot better in linux, i have only changed batteries 3 times in the past 10 months.

Current specs: [don't know anything exact - birthday present]
. Intel Quad Core @ 2.4GHz
. 2GB DDR2 RAM
. nVidia GeForce 8600GT 256MB - got it from BestBuy so I could start using the computer earlier... 'twas a rip-off, but good enough as it is
. 300GB SATA - 'OS drive'
. 500GB SATA - Data drive
. And many things that I can't recount
Compared to my old one from a little over 8 months ago:
. Intel P4 1.4GHz
. 256MB RAM
. nVidia GeForce [something] 128MB - hand-me-down from brother
. 40GB IDE - 'OS drive'
. 20GB IDE - Data drive
To be honest, I haven't found a use for all the power that I have right now... The only big thing I do is programming, as a hobby. I haven't really compiled any of my 'larger' cpp projects, since I've been doing web devel and just running XAMPP as a local server for almost a year now...

Get this, I had been working a job and kind of trapped because I wasn't getting enough pay to get out and find something else. I was using a 9 year old iMac (just because I loved it so much, things had not always been that bad) and a day before my birthday, it died. I was VERY upset. I was also pissed off, because I could not even think to afford a new one. I was furious at the job, my boss (he had cut my pay and increased my workload and given me all kinds of crap, but like I said I was trapped), and at myself for allowing the situation to continue and fester until I had gotten to this point. I had had enough. I went to his off and quit right then and there.
Well alot of things hapened for the next 3 months. I was finally handed down and old Dell Latitude laptop, that had a 333mhz processor on it and a 13 inch screen. (It ran win 98 (first edition) I was able to upgrade it to XP but it was not fun. I saw an article on Ubuntu one day, and then saw Xubuntu! I tried it out and after a few posts here and issues resolved I was hooked!
2 months later I was able to borrow an old Dell GX50 and a 17 inch lcd screen that was gathering dust up in my siblings attic that that was a huge step up in speed and memory so I installed Ubuntu on it and loved it.
Finally things have gotten a bit better in my life, new job (much much much better!) a new place to live, and as a small reward to me for making it trhough the dark into the light, a new laptop!
Nothing fancy, it is quite minimalist and spartan in design (which is just fine with me, I do not like all the extra buttons and crap to make things look high tech and fancy) just a good machine for normal use. I love it!

OZFive, is that a Dell GX60 is that picture? Have you broken the USB ports hidden behind the door on the front. We use those form factors at work and the first thing to break is the front usb. it is not that sturdy and our end users will push a usb plug in too hard and break it. There is nothing behind it so it gives way pretty easily. And does your case close properly?

It is GX50, and it had been pretty lightly used before I got it (mostly they fussed at it and called me over to try to fix their Win2000 installation on it). The USB ports are fine thus far, I have only used them to plug in my iPod occasionally. I did not know they were so badly designed that they would do that though. I will keep it in mind if I use it again. And the case closes without trouble, I did open it up when I got it to inspect it and ensure that there was no damage and to check out the RAM slots.
Sounds like you have had noting but trouble with them though.

They are decent corporate computers but I deal with several hundred at work so I have noticed the those are the first things to break. I am happy that dell is going to the side panel door instead of the hinges in these models. Those seem to deal better with being shipped across the country.

We had quite a lot of those and similar ones. Those users who wanted to use the front USB did not manage to plug anything in because of the weird angle of entry, especially when the the case stood upright on the floor under the desk.
There also were some models which shut themselves down when you tried to use the frontside USB. The cover pressed the power button down when fully opened. Users failed to notice that the computer went down because their attention was fixed on that silly USB cover and on trying to get the plug in. That caused some interesting language.
The cases closed properly if all cables were nicely tucked in.

Case: unknown
Motherboard: Intel D815EEA
CPU: Intel P-III @ 800MHtz (Coppermine)
RAM: 2x 256M
Video: on board (don't play games but watch the odd DVD, need to get a cheap one so I don't have to change my resolution to 800x600)
Sound: on Board (need to get a cheap one to get sound working from speakers and not headphones)
CD: LG 52x max
DVD: Sony DVD/CD R/W
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 713n (birthday present from my wife)
Speakers: J-S (cheap)
Printer: Epson CX4100 (uses colour ink like crazy when all I do is print in B/W)

Still don't know if it was a good buy or not. Probably not that bad I guess. But I'd gladly trade even more of my already-low clock speed for a f****** Nvidia card that could actually run my games in Wine.
Too bad laptops always have this kind of standard balance. If you want a good graphic card, then you'll have to buy a high-end computer and pay megabucks for a uselessly wide screen, useless disk space, even more useless CPU speed, and something like 20% less weight.

Wow! What a difference a few months makes.
I have since sold that x2 4200+ system. AND the laptop.
Only Linux machine in my house is my wife's eeePC.
I just ordered some spare parts to cobble new Ubuntu machine from.

I guess I learned my lesson with a killer Ubuntu machine. It's overkill :)
***EDIT***
So, My parts arrived, and I quickly put this machine together. Running a 1.7ghz P4 is now reminding me how fast that x2 4200 system was. I can make a pot of coffee while booting :) . I am already looking for a quicker processor to toss in, but I'm keeping this puppy.

Yeah, you kind of need an upgrade... I got my computer from our garage and it's better than that.
2.2GHz AMD Athlon XP (not quite as fast as your celeron, but better build)
1GB RAM
64MB ATI Radeon 8500dv
Creative Audigy Sound Blaster 24 bit
DVD-ROM
LG DVD-RW Drive
110GB HDD
Family had it for a couple years, it died, they threw it in the garage for the better one that was sitting next to it, it stayed there for a few years, now I took it and reloaded it with Ubuntu. It finally locked up with Windows after 61.5 hours straight (usually takes a lot less time), my dad says that Windows locking up is a common occurrence (I know that already...), and he says that Linux locks up often too (nope! My Ubuntu installation has never locked up. Some GNOME stuff became unresponsive after a while because of the native WUSB54GC driver, but I installed ndiwrapper and the Windows driver and now it's fine.)
I'm currently saving up my allowance to upgrade it over a year and a half. Because my mom called it a "dinosaur", due to the 19" CRT monitor, I'm calling my plan for upgrading it my dinosaur's "evolution". In 30 weeks, I'm going to have an Athlon 64, 2GB of RAM, and a 256MB nVidia card. 6 weeks later, I'll get a 500GB hard drive. 26 weeks after that, I'm getting an Athlon 64 X2, a new motherboard, a CPU fan (just a cheap one), and a PCI fan. 19 weeks after that, I'll be getting a 512MB ATI Radeon. Just over a year and a half, at $7 per week. Second-day shipping on everything except the last video card, which will have next day.

How did this thread with such a simple question become such a superthread with more than 115,000 views and more than 1,460 replies?!
The computer I use most at home is my Dell XPS M1330. It's a great laptop, it looks nice and it's powerful. See the specs in my signature below. On this laptop I only use Ubuntu.
I also have a desktop computer which I built myself in the August 2006, with Core 2 Duo E6600 etc. Specs below. I used the Antec P150 (http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=81500) case for it, which is a very nice, white, high-quality, and very quiet computer case. I run Windows Vista on it (because I need Photoshop CS3 and some other stuff) and Ubuntu.
I have a Lenovo T61 laptop from my work which is also very good too - with Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2 GHz), 2 GB RAM, 100 GB harddisk, Intel X3100 graphics, and a 1680 x 1050 screen. Windows XP is installed on it, but I made some room and also installed Ubuntu on it.
At work I have a Lenovo Thinkcenter, also a Core 2 Duo, but a slower one (1.8 GHz). I don't like that computer a lot - it's slow, it has a slow harddisk with degrades the performance of the whole thing. Also, I must use Windows XP at work, I don't have the freedom to choose my own OS, unfortunately.

I have two computers I split time across:
Thinkpad X61 laptop with 2.0 gigahertz core 2 duo CPU with 4 meg L2 cache, 2 gig of RAM, 200 gig 7200 RPM hard drive with 16 meg of cache, bluetooth, wireless n, etc. Running dual boot Ubuntu 7.10 and Windows XP Pro, but hardly ever use XP on the laptop.
I also have a home built desktop, Antec super lanboy lightweight aluminum case, sparkle 450 watt power supply, AMD Opteron 185 dual core CPU, 2 gig of OCZ platinum ram, ATI Radeon X1800XT video card with 256 meg of ram, Western Digital Rpator 74gig 10,000 RPM C: drive and a western digital 160 gig 7200 RPM E: drive, DVD burner, Sound blaster sound card, digital speakers and subwoofer. Use XP Pro on this one mostly for games.
I also have a Thinkpad T60 from work, that has XP pro on it and can't be altered, so I hardly every use that outside the office except on trips.

Amazingly haven't had to replace anything since I first put it together. The mobo chipset fan has been seized up for over a year though, quite surprised the mobo hasn't died yet :D

My main desktop (and file server) was built by me (my first one) in late 2004.
AMD Sempron 3100+
Elite Group K8M800-M2
512MB DDR400 (1 stick)
80GB IDE + 250GB SATA HDDs.
NVIDIA GEFORCE FX5200 AGP 8X (128MB)
LG CD-RW.
LG DVD-RW.
Note: Still quite satisfied with its performance, perhaps I'll double the RAM soon.
My test machine is one given to me by a friend who discarded it (it can be said that I saved if from the trash bin) because of a WGA issue combined with a faulty HDD. It is not a brand machine.
AMD Athlon XP 2200+
Syntax mobo (not very popular, but it can accomodate either two DDR sticks or two DIMM ones)
256MB + 128MB DDR (don't remember the clock).
40GB + 40GB IDE HDD.
SiS 350 (or something) AGP 4X card (128MB).
LG DVD-ROM.
Unknown CD-RW
Notes: This machine, although not the most powerful, serve me well. It currently has Debian Etch and Windows XP Pro. It is some sort of TV machine because my TVBOX only works in Windows XP (darn).
My very first machine is a Compaq Presario 7476 (desktop), it has the following breathtaking hardware (got it in 2001):
AMD K6-2 5300MHz.
256MB RAM
40GB + 10GB IDE HDD.
Trident onboard video card (8MB).
Unknown CD-ROM.
Notes: This is the smallest of them all, but I never wanted to give it away. It was my main rig until I built the server pictured above, then it had DVD-ROM and CD-RW. Now it runs its 'stock' Windows 98 SE along with what once was Vector Linux (I managed to bork the installation and now only LILO is visible). Although this machine might seem to be useless it is good to play some 'vintage' games I like like Age of Empires II, or Star Wars Galactic Battlegrouds.
In a different category I put my companion: my laptop.
Acer Aspire 5102WLMi.
AMD Turion 64 X2 TL50.
2GB DDR2-667 Kingston.
120GB Fujitsu IDE HDD (5400RPM).
Atheros wireless.
Rare webcam (doesn't work in Linux)
DVD-RAM.
This is my lot.
Thanks.

I remembered several answers I got for this question from other people I was giving tech support to (sort of):
- ME - "What kind of computer do you use?"
- Somebody - "See, it's a Pentium.."
...
- Another somebody - "It's a black 'HP-Compaq'..."
...
- Another somebody - "It's a laptop with Windows"
...
In those cases I just sigh and either go along with them to check out the machine, or just ask them to write down the model number.
