Nothing too crazy.

I was showing off the mousepad more than the computer in this picture, but you can see my Sony Vaio VGN-FE550G in the background...

that's a good machine for everyone not just for gamers!

i got a 2.6 amd , 758 ram, 160gb+120gb hds , geforce6200 128 , on a 19" Samsung SyncMaster913v (my precious), with an edirol pc-50 midi controller attatched.
dualbooting feisty and xp pro with everything including the midi keyboard working great on both.

plus an old compaq presario 2100 running strictly edgy connecting wireless.

plus an old 1ghz 512ram gf5200 dualbooting xp and edgy .

plus several other old pc's (a 486, a pentium 100 and a 500 or so i recall) with freebsd and other flavors of linux, that i build and rebuild and test OS's just for the kicks.

all this connected to a good firewalled router and a wireless ap , through a 24Mbit connection.

that's my evil empire

ps:
and yea my main computer runs feisty and i use it as my primary OS and no, it's not always crashing. If you're used to Linux, it's a perfectly viable cutting edge OS that i love deeply. Just remember to only do updates when you have the time to fix it, not before working on that important job that you have to deliver in the morning :P

Hi

These are my computer's specifications:

Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft
1 GB RAM
3 Ghz 64-bit Pentium 4 processor
200 GB hard drive
GIGABYTE keyboard
GIGABYTE mouse
PROVIEW 19 inch LCD monitor
DVD/CD burner combo
ATI Radeon 9200 PRO (with 3d acceleration out-of-the-box thanks to the

Here are at least two that have ubuntu dapper drake on them right now. I am waiting for two other computers that are going to be coming in soon for me.

Dell GX10
PIII Intel PIII 1.0GHZ
256 megs of ram
20 gig hard drive
Standard graphics video card from INtel
and augio 97

Thinkpad R32
Intel P-IV 1.60GHZ
256 megs of ram
20 gig hard drive space,
Wireless B connection
10/100 connection
DVD player built in

Aptiva 1152
AMD K6-2 450
192 megs of ram
20 gig fujitsu
30 gig western digital
atl Mach 64
10/100 IBM networking card

Compaq Proliant ML370 4U(Coming soon)
Dual PIII 800
1.5 gigs of ram
Raid 5 4 18.2 gigs SCSI 3 ultra wide

IBM Eserver 8669-4RX(coming soon)
single PIII 1.266 GHZ
256 megs of ram
Raid 5 4 18.2 Gigs of hard drive space.

Neither server have a sound card or a good built in video card. They are both 4 megs of ram video cards in each of them. I am thinking of putting in the proliant server the Vodoo 1 pci accerlation cards in it. I have two of them with the small connection between the cards that can be hooked up. as well as a black connection male to female connection to go from the default D15 connection from the main video card. So it would be a 24 meg in total dual pci accelerated video card. It is using 3dfx chipset in each of the cards. So I can only imagine that it would split the screen in have for each card.

I am wondering about the 64 bit PCI slots that are in there. They are running at 33mhz and at 66 mhx. which are slightly larger than the regular pci slots. Could they be used for a standard pci slots for pci video cards for example. Since neither are capabale of using AGP or PCI express on them. And I still have some room for a standard IDE hard drive in both of them as well. Even if I were to add a standard 20-80 gig hard drive into it it would be detected as well.

AMD Athlon64 3200+ (2 GHz, single-core)
2 GB RAM
GeForce 7600GT 256MB
ASUS SLI mobo
200GB HDD

Prior to my current Linux distro, it was running Vista. Okayish performance, but had issues with lackluster drivers and bloat.

Currently runs Ubuntu 7.04 (32-bit), with XP running in VMWare for the (rare) occasions I must use Windows.

My computer is a computer believe it or not I build from parts that other people gave me.

Pentium 4 3.06GHz w/ 533Mhz FSB (Standard Intel Cooling Heatsink)
Gigabyte 8KNXP Motherboard
1GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 440 w/8x AGP
40GB Maxtor HDD which Ubuntu is installed on.
Plus 160GB Maxtor HDD
NEC DVD-ROM Drive
Plextor CD-RW Drive

I just finished it yesterday after obtaining the final two parts I needed, the Gigabyte Motherboard and the second 512MB RAM card, both from my brother-in-law. I am finally down to one component which I myself have actually bought with my own money, the 160 GM HDD. I retired my ATI Radeon 7500 just the other day when it developed ghosting :( . Oh an finally I upgraded my Motherboard and Processor from a 1.6Ghz P4 to it's current setup without reinstalling linux.

I use firefox on most of them as my browser. The laptop uses Swiftfox, as Firefox seems to randomly crash at intervals and iceweasel has trouble too for some reason.

The ultra-slim compaq uses iceweasel as it's a Debian box.

AMD Athlon 2000XP (runs at 1250mhz)
768MB DDR RAM
Aopen 16x DVD ROM
ATI Radeon 9200 SE @ 128MB
+ a TV Tuner.(haven't set this up properly)
Seagate 40GB.

I have real problems with this, faulty hardware. My CD-RW and 2x 80GB Seagate drives have died. My Geforce 4 Ti @128mb died too. (I found the radeon and the TV tuner... parks round here tend to get computer equipment dumped for some weird reason!)

As soon as this one cranks I am buying a new one... I've had it for four years. My first ever computer I owned (others belonged to parents)

My three computers are in my siggie.

What's funny is the one I use most often is the old Pentium II Compaq. Because it's in the kitchen, our most used room in the house. But, I also use it most often mainly because I can't get over how well it responds when before with Windows 98 on it I'd get a BSOD if I had more than three programs running on it. I repainted it black, and now need to get myself some Ubuntu stickers and stick one on it.

Desktop:
AMD Athlon64 3200+
ASUS A8V Deluxe Motherboard
1GB Corsair XMS Extreme 3200 DDR 400
80GB Western Digital HDD
80GB ExcelStor HDD
120GB Maxtor DiamondMax SATA HDD
Sony CD-RW/DVD combo drive
128MB AOpen Aeolus NVidia 6600GT Graphics Card

Currently Dual-booting Windows XP (Gaming) and Ubuntu Dapper 64 (everything else)

Most of this one became the "family" computer... I kept the 120GB HDD and turned the rest into the only Windows XP PC in the house... No one other than me seems to get Linux, oh well I'm working on it...

The new Linux only box I run is:

AMD Athlon X2 4200+ (Dual core 2.2GHz per core)
ASUS MN2PV-VM Small Form Factor (SFF) Motherboard
3GB Generic DDR2 533Mhz
120GB Maxtor DiamondMax SATA HDD
NEC 16x DVD+-RW
256MB MSI NVidia 7600GS Graphics card

All in a nice SFF case (Aspire X-QPACK Black/Silver)

Runs Feisty 64bit perfectly.

Still got the laptop too which is:

Laptop:
HP Compaq NX7000
1.4GHz Intel Centrino Mobile Processor
768MB RAM (256MB that it came with and 512MB added)
40GB HDD (Not sure of make!)
CD-RW/DVD combo drive (again not sure of the make!)
32MB ATI Radeon 9200 Mobility

That's now running Feisty 32bit only!

PIII 1 ghz

HDD: 20,40,60 gb.

It runs awesome. I can only imagine how it would suck with windows on it. Once I buy a laptop for college this will become our mythTV box.

P.S. fitting three Hard drives in a dell case is not fun. I had to take out the floppy and put it in there on the floppy railings.

New Rig:

(still having a few hardware issues to fix on new rig for linux, mostly for gaming).

I hope ya got a good deal on the QX6700 mrazster, cuz man that is expensive at least everywhere I seen it. The Q6600 seems best bang for buck on the quads, oh and for everyone else looking for buying a new one this is a good benchmark set for today's CPUs. Yeah man I did...otherwise I wouldn't buy one...cause they are crazy expensive...just as you pointed out Q66 are way cheaper...but best "bang for the buck" are the Xeon 3210's...atleast here in sweden.

Ya, you might be right about the Xeon's, was easier/cheaper for me to get my hands on the Q6600 over here though. I gotta say it's a great quad, plus doesn't get too hot in my box even when I'm really making it work. Anyway, that's enough CPU talk... back to other people posting specs :p

Customized Presario SR1610 NX. I am currently running with a BFG 7600GT ( 256mb version ) which I bought, I added 256mb of extra ram to bring it to 768mb ddr ( both working as 333 since one chip is slower speed than the other ). I also bought an LG 8x/4x/2x DVD burner but I can't remember the model number at this time. To support this I also bought an ANTEC PSU 350 watts and I had to force in some screws since HP/Compaq decided to go with propietary form factor case ( even though is advertised as ATX ) but I got it in now. Processor is a slowish sempron 3200 but so far it has worked good even for gaming. The motherboard is MSI but since it came with the PC is not branded, the chipset also escapes me at the time but it does feature integrated video ( ati xpress 200 I think? Not really sure I never used the integrated video anyways ) and it does support SATA but just SATA I ( the one that is just slightly faster so no reason to go SATA yet ) HDD is 80 gb so thats not too much but with a DVD burner I never really needed more.

Everything works flawlessly on Feisty "out of the box" for me except of course the nvidia driver but I installed Envy right away to take care of that ( although I forget and it does crashes X each time there is a Kernell Upgrade or such, but no big deal terminal version of ENVY works good and gets the driver back up in minutes ).

I have a Gateway laptop 15.4 screen, Intel graphics, Intel wireless, Dual Core 1.6ghz processor, 2GB memory, 160GB Sata drive, CD/DVD writer, multimedia card reader.

Backup device is a 320GB HP USB2.0 external HD.

I run Ubuntu Studio 7.0.4 Feisty. The only problem I had was the intel video driver, that was easily resolved and I've had no real problems since.

3 Desktops ranging from AMD 6000 to AMD 1800

And 3 laptops

1.IBM Thinkpad 2.2 Ghz

2.Dell inspiron 2.2 Ghz
I got the Dell for free. It died and got sent back to Dell.
Dell said it was shot they needed to buy a new laptop.
Person got a new laptop and had Dell ship the old back also. He ask me if I wanted it for parts.
15 mins I had it up and running. That was 6 months ago. And it runs great.

My ubuntu box is running 64 bit Fiesty / XP home (for WoW) with the following specs:
Hp zv6000
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2GHz)
2gigs of 2700 ram
100gig internal 5400rpm hdd
128MB ati radeon xpress 200m (the hardest thing to get working besides the damn wireless)
and the dreaded Broadcom 4306 wireless card lol

gotta love compiz fusion :-D

my other box is a old Dell optiplex gx200 with a P3 at 900MHz and a whopping 10GB hdd with 128MB ram. Puppy linux is amazing on this machine. I get around a 27sec cold boot time :) more than enough for the standard online email/chat user. lol i work at circuit city and when people come up to me looking for a "new computer that i can go online and do email on" it is soooooo hard not to laugh. lol gates and his brainwashing......

i'm off

I have a couple of other machines in various build stages which are currently unused as well. One is for the family room and will run Myth Frontend on Edubuntu. The other will be donated to a local charity with Ubuntu Feisty installed.

I also have 2 machine's at my in-law's house for their family to use, although these machines both run Windows XP for now, I am planning to move them onto Ubuntu once I get the time.

I am also planning on building a couple of VIA EPIA EN15000G Mini ITX systems before the end of the year running on 4GB SDRAM Solid State Drives (Gigabyte i-RAM). Ideally I would like one as a dedicated MythTV Backend, one for a dedicated web and mail server and one for a MySQL server.

Finally I would like to replace my Desktop in the next 12 months with a new AMD Quad Core AM3 system (due to be released this fall) and turn my existing Desktop system into a dedicated NFS server since it has 8 SATA ports. That would allow my main desktop machine to be a main desktop machine as opposed to desktop and server. This will make Ubuntu updates and upgrades on my desktop system much easier to handle as it will mean no down time for the services such as mail and web.

that was a little frustrating to get working.
My xorg.conf had the correct resolution listed, but under Ubuntu it showed 1024 x 768. I found out eventually that all I had to do was add the line "1024 x 768" and then choose 1280 x 800 in Ubuntu. :-) now everything has been working perfect for about a month.

Gateway S-7125C 12.1" convertible tablet
3 GB DDR2-667
1.067 GHz Core 2 Duo U7500

It runs 7.04 AMD64 reasonably well- the STAC 92xx sound is a tad flaky (but it is on any distro) and there's no tablet support yet, but that's because Wacom hasn't finished their USB Tablet PC driver. Overall I am pretty impressed with Ubuntu 7.04 on this machine. Hopefully 7.10 will fix the sound issue.

Any of the above listed computers perform well with compiz - some of the stuff out there is awesome! I think I need a better video card though to do most of it.

# VIA P4M800 + VT8237R+ chipset
# Socket 478
I think the main problem with this board is the integrated S3 Unichrome graphics with IGP
Does that Geforce 7100 perform well?

I'm very new to Ubuntu, but I'm learning. I put Kubuntu 7.10 Tribe 5 on my laptop, and I'm so happy with it (and fed up with Windows), that I've decided to put it on my desktop. As I type this, it's installing in the other room :). For my Windows-only programs, I plan on setting up a virtual machine on my desktop... bye bye, Bill -- you'll never rob me of my system resources with Vista, and I'll never be subject to your ludicrous DRM methods.

LAPTOP:
Dell Inspiron 1100
Kubuntu 7.10 Tribe 5

1GB Ram
80GB 7200RPM Samsung hd

17" Sony Trinitron CRT monitor

I originally built my desktop when I was 15, and I'm 23 now. The only surviving compenents, I think, are the power supply, floppy drive, and case... and they've all seen better days. Oh, and my monitor, too. You get what you pay for, I suppose, cause that thing was expensive back in the day.

I believe my original configuration was a Celeron 366mhz (o/c to 550mhz), 128mb ram, a 13 gig hd, and a video card that I mowed lawns ALL SUMMER to pay for -- a Diamond Monster 3D II 12MB (ya know, I had to opt over the 8MB version) sporting the whopping Voodoo 2 technology.

Odd how times have changed, isn't it? I remember playing games on the Commodore 64 systems (attached to TVs) when I was in elementary school.

My system is a straight up Gateway (e) machine Model number W3609. The only modification I made was to install an 80G secondary hard drive and another RAM card. It came with Vista (worst OS in the history of computing.. My old Commodore64 was better.) I nixed that after it decided to eat my personal files for breakfast one morning. I installed XP on the 80G, and put Ubuntu on the larger 110G hard drive. It has worked very well like this. I haven't had any of the dual boot problems that I have read about (scary!), So I consider myself very fortunate. This machine works VERY well with Ubuntu and even Beryl runs smooth on it. At less then $400 it has been a sweet conversion for me. One interesting note though. Whenever you start the computer you get a message saying "Missing OS" and a flashing curser. Scared the pants off me the first time I saw it. Just hit the space bar, though, and it gives you the OS shopping list with Windows on the bottom of the pile... where it belongs.

Right now, I primarily use a DIY box:
Intel P4 2.0 GHz
Intel D865PERC mobo
1 GB RAM
Dual 120GB EIDE hard drives (one for Windows, one for Ubuntu)
Samsung LightScribe CD/DVD-RW drive
SB Audigy LS
MSI GeForce NS7600GS 256MB
Firefox for the browser, in Windows and Ubuntu

I also have two or three other machines gathering dust right now (old P3 desktops and P3 dual-processor servers). On top of that, I probably have enough loose parts to build at least one more complete machine, but the specs on it would suck horribly.

My primary PC is a computer store build. It was a pretty good offer and worked out cheaper for me for them to build it, than for me buying all the components and building it myself.

Anyway, it's an AMD64 X2 5200+, Seagate 400GB 7200RPM, GeForce 8800GTS 640MB, 1GB DDR2, dual-booting Vista and Gutsy.

My back-up is a self-built Athlon XP 2000+, Western Digital 80GB 5600RPM, GeForce Ti4400, 512MB DDR, booting Feisty.

I just rebuilt my computer a few months ago, here's the specs...

Intel Badaxe2 Motherboard (975XBX2)
Intel Q6600 2.4ghz Core 2 Quad
2GB of Corsair XMS DDR 2
4x 500GB SATA RAID0
2x 500GB IDE
1x LG DVDRW
Nvidia GeForce 7950GT w/ 256MB
24" Widescreen LCD @ 1920x1200 - Dell 2407WFP-HC (High Color Gamut)

Currently runs Ubuntu 7.10 and nothing else. I don't need Windows. I have my Xbox 360 for games.

All this bad boy does is crunch OGR25 numbers from distributed.net when I'm not playing around online. :)

Is is me, or do most of your machines have less than 1gb of ram....

yeah, that seems to be 'the thing' now ;)

My computer is quite high-end but it only has 1GB of ram - when it was new (~year ago), it was quite unballeneced because even then 2GB would be normal for what it could do, but now of everything the video card (7600GT) is rather old :(
