ASUS P4C800 E-Deluxe motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 Xeon (3,2 GHz) CPU
Leadtek Geforce A6600GT TDH AGP
1 GB of DDR400 RAM
Maxtor 6L300R0 hard drive, 300GB, 7200RPM

Samsung SyncMaster 204TS 20" monitor (resolution 1600*1200, refresh rate 60Hz)

ATI 9600XT 128MB
52x CD-RW

A total of 400GB storage.(at least)
I also hooked up a PS2 eyetoy to my workstation for that extra added touch of geekdom :)
I don't ever sit at the server, I just use it with vpn.
And I net render 3DS Max at fairly high rates for a home user.
That and I have a 300 year old laptop with Ubuntu, which makes it only seem 150. ;)
I'm am in the process of installing dapper on the server right now...

Rescuing the Dell from Windows ME is what first led me to try and play around with Ubuntu. The rest is history. I'm actually looking at a System 76 box if my PowerBook exhibits one more problem (3 faulty displays, a warped case, a dead logic board, an overheating power adapter that was replaced w/ a 3rd party sol'n, 2 defective batteries, 2 recalled batteries, and an overheating battery that was replaced w/ a 3rd party sol'n). I got fed up with Apple after being locked into their platform for nearly 10 years.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ CPU
ASUS A8N SLI mobo
1 GB RAM (just basic Crucial stuff)
eVga GeForce 7900 GTO graphics card
Hauppauge PVR 150 tv tuner (I've got to get around to getting this working on Ubuntu)
Seagate Barracuda 7900.9 250 GB SATA drive (dual-boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu Breezy)

Case is just a cheapo Logisys case with clear side panel (looks pretty good with all the blue LED fans though).

Soon I'll upgrade the CPU to a dual-core (assuming I get the green light from the wife :) ) and I plan on dropping another gig of RAM in and grabbing a sound card as well.

Well I thought I would show off the two unusual ones I have...
The camo one is my test box, it runs dual 1ghz with 1gig ram.
The wood one is an old IBM computer with a 500 mhz processor. This computer has actually been rolled out as a sql-ledger / samba server at my father's business. Both have Ubuntu server images on them.
As for my everyday computer I have just a run of the mill 2ghz / 512 / 200gig machine.

Soon this will be mine...
I finally decided on the new Mac I want to purchase. It has been two months without a Mac and I am going crazy. hahaha
Within two weeks, I am ordering the Mac Pro with the dual 3.00 GHz Xeon (dual core) processors. With the new 21" Viewsonic G225FB monitor I bought recently, I am finally going to have a kick *** computer for running Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Linux. I am getting the smallest HD size, because I want to add 4 x 750 GB HDs when I have more money. With the RAM, I will get 1 GB because I want to add my own 2 GB modules later on when the price falls down to reality. LOL
On Wednesday, I checked out the Mac Pro in the new Apple Store in Albuquerque - WOW! Absolutely impressive! Bootup to Desktop - 15 seconds! Shutdown - less than 10 seconds. I am quite impressed with the Mac Pro...

1028 Meg mem
60 gig HD (4200rpm, I think)
I took out the broadcom miniPCI, and only use the Belkin 54G USB network adapter. It works out-of-the-box.
The battery is almost shot -only get 5-20 minutes. I think this is mostly because I haven't got the CPU Frequency scaling to work.
The bottom gets really hot, so it's more of a 'desktop replacement'

Assembled by yours truly, mainly for two games that will own my life: Spore and Supreme Commander. Though I've had fun playing Prey, HL2, and F.E.A.R. And I have to say Ubuntu/Beryl is a dream on this system.
My two cents.

Funny this thread would reappear now... I'm eagerly awaiting shipment of my new toys!
My workhorse machine is a Dell C840 laptop - 1.8GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB HD. About 4 years old and still going strong.
But I got bored last weekend...
What I'll be assembling this weekend:
ASUS P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe mobo
Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz
Two dual-head nVidia 7600GS video cards (lotsa screen space!)
1GB RAM (would have gone for two, but all my 512M-1G machines never touch swap - I'll add more later if I find a use for it!)
That ought to be a fun machine to play with...
I also have a ridiculous number of other systems laying around, mostly machines "too old" (yeah, sure) for others to be interested in them. I got a lot of them free from the office!
Dell PowerEdge 650SC: 2.4GHz - 1GB RAM - 1TB RAID5
Dell Dimension: 3GHz - 1GB RAM - used for my "media PC" in the living room
3 Dell laptops (another C840, C810, C640)
Dell GX200: 1Ghz - 512MB RAM - gets used-and-abused as the "testbed"
Another Dell GX200 that is the firewall
(can you tell who my company uses for computers?!? ;) )
...and a Mac Mini (PPC version) that's running Ubuntu instead of OS X!

I don't know why you would say that your machines never touch swap??
Windows absolutly needs swap to run! (effeciantly) It does not matter if you have 2 gig of ram.
It may be that nothing is ever put into swap, but lots, if not all programs will ask for much more memory space than you physically have. Thats where swap comes into play. Whether the program actually uses that swap is a different story.

Yes, I would agree, Windows definitely would need swap. My work laptop (WinXP) uses it all the time, with 1GB RAM.
But my Linux machines never touch it under normal circumstances. ("I don't do Windows!" :) ) For instance, I'm now on the machine I specced above and this line came from. It's been running all day, doing all sorts of things, and swap shows 180k used which is all I've ever seen used (all machines show some small amount used that never changes). Physical memory shows 77% used (22% programs, 55% cache). On the machines I can't do multi-head (and thus don't run a bunch of apps at the same time) it seldom goes above 256-300MB total used.
I was surprised, to say the least, when I first saw this. But hey, I'll take it! I will grant that this is completely dependent on what programs a person uses and how they are used. In my case, gobs of memory aren't necessary, but I have seen some who can use all they can get.

My pride and shame. My beautiful machine, which, in spirit (or some such), is about as old as me, known as Ezekiel (or Zekey - my flash drive is Zekey Jnr, just for consistency).
AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 1.67Ghz
512 meg of RAM (probably DDR)
20 gig Quantum Fireball HDD (two 10 gig partitions - one for XP, the other for documents)
80 gig Seagate HDD (five partitions, if my memory doesn't fail me - tried Xubuntu on it, but then I went and formatted it and totally screwed my computer up...)
Sony CD-RW
Floppy disk drive
A4-Tech PS/2 mouse
Microsoft USB mouse
(Company presently unknown) 'Office Keyboard' (in other words, the Function keys get effectively rendered useless until the Office option is switched off - slightly annoying, but provides a good indicator of boot status)
Sony Trinitron Multiscan E200 (I just like typing that out) 17" flatscreen CRT monitor (second-hand, but might-as-well be brand new for the lack of troubles I've been having with it - beautiful thing compared to my old 15")
Expecting to either get myself at least another 20 gig (for a non-fudged-up Ubuntu install) or some more RAM (hopefully 512 meg).

Currently using a ridiculously-customised Windows XP Pro SP2 (Industrial Tango icons and a Vista build 5342 visual style).
I also have an as-yet-unnamed troll doll on top of my monitor. For some reason.

Now have a dedicated Ubuntu Box...
MSI KT2 Ultra2 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 2000+ CPU
512MB RAM
20GB main drive
40GB secondary drive
Cheap/Old Videocard (Savage S3?)
DVD ROM (generic)
CD ROM (even more generic)
Cool black RAIDMAX case I bought for $5. Has a window on the side
Sweet GREEN lit fan...
Needs more RAM, then I'll be happy with it. Ok, maybe I can take out one of the generic drives and toss in a DVD Burner.... and maybe rip out one of the Hard Drives and add something meatier... while I'm at it, maybe the front could be all matching...

The case is an NZXT Lexa with a clear side window and front LED Temperature Display. It has a 500 watt NZXT Power Supply. The motherboard is an ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe socket 775. CPU is a Dual Core Pentium D 820, cooling for the CPU is a Zalman CNPS9500 LED cooler. It keeps the temps down and has a cool blue LED inside as well. It has 2 GB of OCZ Gold Series PC2 5400 RAM in dual channel. The computer comes with 2 optical drives, a Sony DRU-800A DVD-RW (Dual Layer) and a Sony CRX320EE DVD player/CD-RW. It also comes with 2 hard drives, a 10,000 RPM SATA 74GB Western Digital Raptor and also a SATA 2 250 GB Western Digital Drive. Right now my comps are in disarray there are only 2 comps actually working at my place right now. 1 is my laptop
1.25ghz G4 Powerbook
768Mb PC2700 DDRSDRAM
80GB HD
ATI RV350 64Mb
Mac OS 10.4.8
and I have my main desktop, I have had this desktop since a few months after the athlon 64 debuted and it represents a good portion of that years tax break ;) I think this is one of the best most reliable computers I have ever used and I truly love it.
Athlon 64 3000+ socket 754
1.5GB PC3200 DDRSDRAM
ATI Radeon 9800XT
Audio Trak Prodigy 7.1 (never got this working the right way since 5.10, no spdif out)
74GB WD Raptor 10k SATA
80GB Seagate Barricuda V SATA
80GB Seagate 7200.7 SATA
200GB Maxtor 16Mb Cache SATA
(could use some more drives actually)
530W Forton Source PSU
Little cooler master case
4xDVD/CD burner
Ubuntu 6.10 ix86
I'm looking for a web server box right now, something cheap like a Optiplex GX170-260 on ebay. I am also looking into picking up a Dell Precision 450-470 to use as a main workstation, that way I can move my Athlon 64 box onto something like Ubuntu 6.10 x64 Server so I can play with some 64 bit code.

Western Digital Caviar 80gb SATA hard drive with a Titan HDD cooler to keep it around 30-31 C

Four 80mm fans to keep it at a nice 80 degrees
D-link DWL-G510 wireless adapter
Ubuntu 6.10 Christian Edition, [edit] Windows XP Media Center Edition (mainly for DVDs and the latest Americas Army)
Here are two pictures of the main one (a bit sloppy, but you get the idea):

Would it be better to run RAID 10? Creates 4 parities on the HD's taking up half of the drive, Like in RAID 1, then can strip off data off of two drives per, like in RAID 0. It's just a suggestion.

You built your own laptop!?!? Teach me please!
Just do a search for barebones laptops and you should be able to get one and put it together yourself (previous experience inside of a computer would be helpful though). Here (http://www.google.com/search?q=barebones+laptops&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) are some Google results for it.

Still a bit of Window$ on the HDD for audio production and DJing purposes ..
Vista's going to work just fine on this one but unfortunately this is one of the PCs whose hard drive it will never step on.

a 8800 isnt exclusively for vista.... right? I think its just the first card to support directx... im sure if there are drivers for it in linux (doubt it yet) that you can easily use it in linux / mac

Yup, that's true, but DX10 only comes with Vista, so there's not much use getting an 8800 unless you also get Vista... and I just can't bring myself to do that yet (yuck :( )

Now have a dedicated Ubuntu Box...
MSI KT2 Ultra2 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 2000+ CPU
512MB RAM
20GB main drive
40GB secondary drive
Cheap/Old Videocard (Savage S3?)
DVD ROM (generic)
CD ROM (even more generic)
Cool black RAIDMAX case I bought for $5. Has a window on the side
Sweet GREEN lit fan...
Needs more RAM, then I'll be happy with it. Ok, maybe I can take out one of the generic drives and toss in a DVD Burner.... and maybe rip out one of the Hard Drives and add something meatier... while I'm at it, maybe the front could be all matching...
Added another gig of RAM and a GeForce MX420 so I can run Beryl. She's running lean and mean. Not to mention this baby's not so jealous of my windows box anymore.

Spare laptop: Basically this laptop died and was diagnosed with a dead mobo right out of warranty, couldn't get it covered, needed a laptop, and the mobo wasn't worth the expense. It just came back alive a few months later.. i decided to test it before parting it and selling it (a guy was interested in the LCD display cus it was high res) and it just worked.. I ended up with a spare laptop.. Installed Ubuntu on it... Gonna have to reformat and install WinXp since i'm giving it to my girlfriend though.. :)

Runs pretty well for me, but nothing amazing. Gonna be upgrading to very soon:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (I know the E4300 is better value, but I want the hardware virtualisation support for running XP in Ubuntu for what wine cannot handle. Its only about $10-$20 more anyway)
A decent Core 2 motherboard, probably MSI P965 Platinum

Bought with father's money at the age of 20 :
Pentium-III 500 mhz
64 MB SD RAM (Sold it and installed two 128 MB SD RAM sticks after 2 years)
15 GB Quantam Fireball (after it crashed, bought a 40 GB Seagate IDE)
Award Bios Chipset
FSB Pentium-2 compliant motherboard
S3 8 MB Accelerated Video Card (Trashed it and bought nVIDIA GeForce mx 400 64 MB later)
Soundcard made by creative
Creative 2:1 Sub-Woofer
15 inch Philips CRT monitor
PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard
OS: Windows 98 preinstalled, switched to Redhat 7.1 few years later. It didn't work pretty well and hence switched to windows 2000 and it is still running the latter.
After moving to USA at the age of 24, I bought with my own income:
Laptop: Dell Inspiron B130
Intel Centrino Mobile Technology 1.80 GHZ
15.4-inch WXGA display
1 GIG DDR RAN
Intel integrated Media Accelerator 900 graphics card
40 GB Harddrive
MS Windows XP home
16x DVD RW
Dell 1470 Internal Wireless 802.11a/b/g
56Kbps Modem and Integrated Network Card (ethernet)
Weight: 6.7lbs (with 4-cell battery)
4-cell Lithium Ion Battery
Ports: 3 USB 2.0, VGA out, Modem RJ-11, audio line-out (for speakers headphones),
external microphone port, ExpressCard 34 slot
One year warranty
6 months later I decided to purchase a gaming desktop for playing latest 3D games (although later I lost interest in games and found gaming to be a mere waste of time for nothing, although sometimes Planet Penguine Racer helps reduce stress after a long day of hard work lol)
AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 dual-core 3800+
OS: Windows XP Professional and Ubuntu GNU/Linux 6.10 Edgy Eft with a full-functional and ultra-fast Beryl (Soon I'm going to wipe out XP and make it a
full-fledged GNU/Linux based box.)
1 GIG Dual-Channel DDR25 SDRAM (533MHz)
160 Gig Single Serial ATA Hard Drive manufactured by Samsung
DVD-RW/CD-RW Combo
256MB PCI ExpressTM NVIDIA® GeForce® 7300LE TurboCache (When you turn on your PC's power, it borrows some more 256 RAM from your PC's physical memory, given that you at least have 1 GIG DDR2 RAM, to produce ultra-fast and rich performance in Beryl, Compiz and 3D games)
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
