Big desktop:
Dual Xeon 2.8GHz
512 MB RAM (whatever type it is is horribly expensive to buy more of)
nVidia 6600 dual DVI - 15" Eizo, 17" Samsung DVI panels
Two DVD/CD writers (one dual layer)
Samsung 250 GB SATA HD
Dual boot Dapper & XP (though only seem to use XP when I need to use my scanner & photoshop... and no, I don't like the Gimp!)
Laptop
Asus S5N - an extremely light and lovely notebook but running Win XP Pro (work compatibility issues).
House/family PC
A bargain Acer desktop for kids to play games on - no idea what spec but AMD based, about 15 months old. Dual boot XP and Mandriva
Husband's PC - don't know exactly - failed Ubuntu 6.06 install currently.
Server 1 - pretty little Shuttle box running Ubuntu 5.10 (soon to be upgraded, I suspect)
Server 2 - in process of being built... will probably run some random other Linux install (depending on what husband wants to learn next!)

I'd recommend the Geforce 6800. I bought it because it can be softmodded which drastically increases its performance.

Intel Celeron D 2.53Ghz CPU
256Mb DDR RAM (under Windows I needed more, under Linux, I don't)
2x Seagate 40Gb IDE HDD's (identical, but one has a rubber shock protector sleeve)
256Mb nVidia GeForce FX 5500 \ GeForce 6600 (it's supposed to be an FX 5500, but it identifies itself as a 6600 and has the features of a 6600 such as support for dual monitors and a TV through DVI, SVGA and S-Video ports... shame it only runs 2 monitors...)
Onboard sound
CD burner \ DVD reader combi (been meaning to fix that problem)
1x 15" VGA LCD from a HP Pavilion and 1x 27" LCD HDTV via DVI running at 1024x768 (I don't often use the smaller screen though)
Belkin PCI WiFi card supporting 802.11g
USB card reader, 2 thumb drives and a belkin Bluetooth dongle.
Microsoft wireless optical mouse (my other one broke)
Currently runs Ubuntu Dapper with XGL almost flawlessly following PHG's guide and if TwinView would clone the desktop rather than spanning (poorly), I'd use this to show off if I did computer trade shows again in the future (the big screen sat there demonstrating XGL and GNOME while I sit there with the smaller screen toying with it).

Laptop:
IBM T42
Pm 1.8 Ghz
80 Gb internal hd + 80Gb USB2 external hd
1Gb RAM
onboard a/b/g wireless (Atheros)
ATI Radeon 9600 (128Mb) video
onboard Bluetooth
Desktop:
home built
Intel d815eea2 mb
P3 1 Ghz - 133 fsb
hda - 200 Gb 7200 rpm / hdb 160Gb 7200rpm / external 80 Gb (yes, another one)
512 Mb Ram (board maxed out)
GeForce MX440 (64Mb)
Samsung 19" LCD monitor
(Yeah, I know it's getting kinda long in the tooth, but it sure runs sweet.)
Both are dual boot Dapper / XP. I know...I know, but there a couple of work apps that I still need win for. Anyway, niether one spends as much as 10% of it's run time in XP. And, oh yeah, Dapper rocks... neither machine has ever run this well before.

Custom build.. But I forgot what's in it! It's ancient though.
I know I chose an ASUS motherboard, a pretty good graphics card (nVidia, perhaps..) and I've currently got two chips packed in there giving me 512mb RAM. I also have the original HD which is 7GB (and still going strong!) and one that my dad gave me (20GB) when his 40GB blew up and he bought himself an 80GB.
I found this thread hunting for information on AMD 64 X2 AMD Athlon 64 FX 62 2.8 GHz Dual-Core L2 2 MB processors, though. I'm planning a new build to give dear old bernard a new leash on life. :)
Currently my computer is bog-standard grey with some holes in the front where I lost the panels! Helps with cooling though...

So I'm actually using (K)ubuntu Dapper but who can resist a "show your gear" thread???
All gear paid for by me, stolen by me, borrowed by me, found by me, etc ;)
No close relatives to 'leech' off of, though I might if there were ;)
I put up with a pos 800 mhz box through uni, so I'm making up for it now. Still frugal though, I've only spent about $700 on the whole setup.

Desk area
Dell E176FP: This is a flat panel lcd, 17-in. Obviously. Love it.
Logitech G15: Gaming & multimedia keyboard with lcd display. Custom bash script displays system info now, working on script to display stats in games. Minimal support currently, but groups are working on it.
Logitech notebook optical mouse: Cheap, works great though for gaming.
CAVS ShuttlePro: Oh yeah! Cheap now but I couldn't live without it for my A/V work.
Rack area
HP-259: Gaming headset - cheap, eBay, but does what I need (mackie mixing headset for detailed work)
Catalyst 2924XL: Switch
Cisco 2600: Router
4G iPod mini: Using amarok script to sync with it
Casio Exilim EX-S500: Well, just the cradle, using the camera to take the pic -> using digikam for management of images and to sync it
Speakers: Cost me $5 and that's how they sound. Good bass , ok for games, even 5.1 surround but they suck.
"cyclops": Custom NAS server. Headless.
Debian Sarge, Samba, Webmin, NFS, Zeroconf(avahi) off of a 1G CF card on an IDE/CF interface.
1TB RAID10 SATA array on a RocketRaid controller.
Custom case, aluminum framing/copper screen for RFI, gloss-black plexi cover.
"callisto": Custom desktop. No-name case from newegg. Modded to include triple 1.5" fans for HD cooling (right side you can see the front of); blue led's behind them.
Running Kubuntu Dapper 6.06
40G drive for "/"
2x 100G drives in a LVM array for "/home"
Single 100G for "/var" (php/web dev environment, audio/video temp area)
2G DDR ram
AMD Athlon 64 3200, 512M cache
ATI Radeon 9250 256M AGP video(yeah I know it's old)
Telco rack and shelves: Free throwaways from a datacenter
Think that's about it. I've tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu (along with Debian from my server experience before I ran into the Ubuntu family). KDE is more to my taste but I won't start a war here. Most things came up just fine - had slight issues with the ATI card and xorg, and some minor bugs with Dapper and sound, and the lack of support for the G15 so far, but otherwise loving it.

OCZ 520W PSU
Watercooling for CPU
19GB Western Digital HDD
Thats about it right now. I am keeping my eyes open for a good rack chassi to put everything in. I have already bought some new hardware which is patiently awaiting to be used, two 320GB Seagate harddisks, new PCI-E NIC and some other stuff. Now I just need a good rack :D
Here's my main computer:

Sorry for the messy photographs; those are of the computer when I was testing if all was working properly, so everything wasn't installed, and the cables has not been tucked away, etc,.
Motherboard is, by the way, currently RMA'd and should be back soon.
Some of the specifications:
Pentium D Model 805 2.8GHz @ 4.2GHz (temporary CPU)
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
A-DATA Vitesta PC8000 2*512GB (1GB)
Tagan 580W PSU
Watercooled (CPU, GPU and soon NB)
4 HDDs (2pcs of Seagate 320GB, 1pcs of Samsung 250GB, 1pcs of Seagate 80GB).
DVD and CDR-W
Asus X1900XTX
Samsung Syncmaster 970p
+ some other unimportant stuff...
CPU will be exchanged with a Core 2 Duo (Conroe) Model E6700 (2.667GHz) very soon.

Hmm. Good question! I've never really stopped to think about it before.
My Ubuntu box is my "D" computer (gets about 1% of my use), so it's not ultra-snazzy. I got the computer system because it was only $99 on one-day sale and wanted to see what it was like for the price -- and if it would do Linux:
Let's see here...
It started as a 2005 Fry's GQ3121 complete computer package ($99, out the door):
ECS 741GX-M motherboard (ATX-Mini form factor)
Sempron 2200 CPU
Generic 40X CD-ROM
Panasonic 3.5" floppy drive
Generic Antec-clone mini-tower case
I upgraded it up with:
PNY 512M PC2700 [$19]
Ultra V-Series PS (big, quiet fan) [free after rebate]
Hitachi "Deskstar" 160G 7200RPM drive [$26 after rebate]
Creative "Live Plus" webcam [free after rebate]
EVGA e-GeForce 5200 128M AGP-8x [free after rebate]
Larger, quieter AMD factory CPU fan [free, scrounged]
Altec-Lansing ACS33W speaker system [$18 a long time ago]
CompUSA Zydas 1211 USB Wireless-G dongle ($2.99 after rebate)
It shares with my main "B" XP desktop system via:
AirLink101 KVM switch [$15] to a new
Microsoft ergonomic keyboard [$12 after rebate]
Hanns-G 19" HU-196D TFT/LCD monitor [$104 after rebate]
Lynx Mouse [came with the GQ3121]

My great machine that does all my trix to me, the most porridgest of the all, great.
Compaq presario 5000 (one of the most ugly computers that ever build)
700 mhz (duron)
A main board with via chipset that do sux, not via the mainboard, onboard sound card.
128 mb + 256 mb singelsided ram (of course 100 mhz ok cl2 but anyways)
Geforce 3 elsa gladiac 920 ti 500 64 mb (this I bought recently)
Dvd rom
10 gb seagate at the moment
And a dull weather damaged nic with realtec chip wont work in windows almost at all.
Adds and modification's
This computer the sold to my father for quite some amount of money, it was dull even back then year 2000, 133 mhz ram I guess they could have get us for that price.
Think the core might be little damage from the beginig always to hot.
It's always been to darn hot, now I have a new cu cooler for 92 mm fans.It cant go fanless with that thing that was little ill.And did move a capacitor so that the cu heatsinker would fit.
A main board that do suck, do not even know how much I can get in this machine if someone does know how many mhz I can put in this machine send me a PM.

The Myth box and the Gaming rig share one of the 20" displays with a standard KVM, but with their own keyboards and mice so that I can change channels and recordings while I'm warcracking away on my main screen. I've also got a 32" Olevia HD LCD that I can send any of my video sources too via a distribution box. it used to sit happily on the wall next to me, i'll have to figure out placement again when i move. oh the cables.......
EDIT:

You guys sure have some nice machines here on these forums. I especially like those SUN servers I saw a couple pages back, and the guy on the first couple pages with the sweet setup that had 3 rigs and a projector running off DVI. I would kill for one of those projectors... props. Now on to my rigs...
I'll edit this post with some pictures in a little bit because I am in the process of organizing my desk, but the specs of all my machines are as follows:
Main workstation:
Alienware rebuilt

Interesting thread, so I think I'll hop in on the fun.
I have two machines:
Avenger -
IBM Thinkpad A31
Ubuntu 6.06
1.6GHz Intel Pentium 4 Mobile
256MB RAM
40GB HDD
802.11b, CD-RW, 1024 x 768
Comment: My main machine, I have it with
me all the time, and even use it
as my car stereo since my car doesn't
one
Evasion0 -
Custom Built
Ubuntu 6.06 & WinXP (ugh...)
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
512MB RAM
20GB HDD (WinXP) and 120GB HDD (Ubuntu, w00t!)
Some basic nVidia card
Tv Tuner card, DVD-ROM, CD-RW, 1280x1024
Comment: This is my desktop, but I basically
use it to get on my parent's shitty
NetZero account, and share it with
my laptop. I also watch some TV and
the occasional Star Trek:TOS or X-Files
episode on DVD.
Here's a picture of my setup, I'm sure you can guess which machine is which. Oh, and in case anyone's curious, the painting is "Self-Portrait" by Casey Kidd. Beautiful artwork, don't ya think?

I have some cable-managment to do and a Ubuntu logo to put on the HSF shroud.
I wanna shorten up the power bundel from the PSU to the mobo but Im a little scared. Its like twice as long as it needs to be.
The box is up and runnin' well. I also cannot stress how cool/well built this case is. Pics do not do it justice. The fans that also come with are very quiet. I dont have a constant internet connection to it 'till I get into my new house but I borrowed one to get it setup and updated. The responsive of Gnome really didnt seem to improve all that much but games and encoding media is INSANE. Xvid movies easily take half the time now. Im also gettin almost 16000 in 3DMark 2001 (not for linux).
For my monitor I have a Dell 2405.

ATI Control Center only shows 128 mb for the graphics (and not the 512 mb which should be the correct values)
Webcam - never tested it, never used it, actually (I'm very shy to show myself on the net :-D )

My home brew stealth PC:
Antec P150 case
Antec Phantom 500 fanless 500W PSU with electricians tape masking the LED at rear.
AMD Sempron 64 3000
Foxconn Winfast 760GXK8MC motherboard
2x512Mb DDR400 generic RAM
Maxtor 320Gb SATAII HDD (6V300F0) in a SilenX HDSS
Seagate 320Gb SATAII HDD (ST3320620AS) in a Scythe Quiet Drive
WD 40Gb IDE HDD (WD400JB-00ENA0) on standby except for daily backups of /home, /etc and /usr/local.
NEC ND-3500AG DVDRW
Scythe Ninja CPU Heatsink and 120mm FAN
Nexus 120mm case fan
Both fans wired up to DPDT switches which feed them from either 12V or 5V rail - non-soldering-iron-fearing man's fan control.
Power LED is wired to another switch so that I can turn the led off while the system is running.
My mum sleeps in the same room when she stays with us, so silence/much quietness and no LED is essential for running it 24/7 (for SqueezeBox and general media server duties). When the fans are on 5V it is very hard to tell it is on unless you are ~ 0.5M away from it and actively listening, either of the SATA drives are doing a lot of seeking or hda is on for daily backups. The hum from the wireless access point (Dlink AP2400) is generally louder, seriously!
Runs only Dapper (FC5 is installed, but have not used it, will get around to deleting it at some point).
Also have an Apple G4 12" iBook with 60Gb HDD and 512Mb RAM. Dapper installed but rarely used.

This is a great thread. I'm impressed by all the work people put into their boxes. It's cool.
This (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=237148) is a 1Ghz Optiplex GX150 salvaged from the recycling yard and refurbished. It has an 80Gb 7200rpm drive in it at the moment, but that was only for testing purposes, and it won't be in there much longer.
This (http://cgi.ebay.com/USED-CUSTOM-Dell-Inspiron-8000-1Ghz-256Mb-20Gb-CDRW-W2K_W0QQitemZ150023354901QQihZ005QQcategoryZ140080 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is similar to the one I use on a daily basis. Mine is a little more maxed-out though, and isn't painted (... yet?). The rebuilt one was rehabbed off spare parts and brought back to life, although I wish I could've done more with that crack. :-k
I have another laptop -- a Latitude CPx J750GT (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pcpxhj/) that just plays music. Painted it silver in much the same way as the others.
I also have a giant GX260 (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx260) sitting around at the moment. I haven't a clue what to do with a 2.53Ghz machine, and getting parts for it would actually cost me money ... which I'm not used to. ... ;)
Of course, these things change a lot. If I find another, I'll be sure to show it off.

And i`ll bet some of you`se actually "use" it all too.;)
Well it`s old news now but we bought an old M.E pc off a friend for £50 a few months ago as she was moving teen to laptop and we were about to buy some shiny new xp sys BUT luckily decided to settle on this bargain just to learn the basics first....Only the unit is part of the original £50 worth,The m.e is in the dinning room now and all THIS is bits and pieces ive salvaged in this last few months from friends and family. The extra ram and hd`s in them came from even more bits of pc junk.Needless to say they now have Ubunto/xp.. with Kubunto on other(the m.e`s next:twisted: )
Not worth listing the specs as im sure you`se get the idea but suffice to say for £50 it all works great and at least NOW when we go to buy a decent one I`ll be fore-armed with all the great new knowlage ive learned from a bunch of junk and of course all you`se guys on here...
Im just glad the 4 months of windows "led" me to ubunto and you`se guys and am only sorry i did`nt find my way here sooner,
14559.....mind you MY chairs comfier..14560:cool:
GOOD STUFF PEOPLE......(NO KID OF MINE WILL BE EMBARASSING MOI WITH THEIR PROFOUND KNOWLAGE OF PC`s..........IM MAKING SURE IM "THERE" FIRST)

Recently I bought an old computer to use WinXP on (uni says we have to have it, taking a Dreamweaver and a Excel Macro Programming course...) Before installing XP I wanted to try Ubuntu on it. So I slung in the 6.06 LTS desktop version cd and installation went smooth and fine. Using it wasn't as slow as I thought it'd be, everything loaded in a reasonable amount of time. Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, GIMP, Gaim etc. All was fine.
I've discovered now after installing XP, that Ubuntu loaded faster than XP on it.
Specs:
AMD Athlon K7 500Mhz
512mb RAM
1x17gb hd
1x10gb hd
LG 52x CD-ROM
Aopen 40x12x48x CD-burner
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200 / 32mb AGP TV Out
1,44mb Floppy
Creative Audio PCI soundcard
Realtek RTL8139 / 10/100 PCI NIC
TCI Pro Midi-Tower/ATX
Runs really silent for an AMD!
http://images.aucland.com/ImgUsers/0/27/2714/271467/27146703.jpg
When I'm done with uni I'll once again install Ubuntu on it (perhaps I'll go with Xubuntu to make it run even faster!) and MAYBE sell it on the cheap. Also considering upgrading it to a 800MHz processor. We'll see.

I got it when they exchanged it for a cluster i built for them.
I also have a couple of ppc's around and another older sparc station that i don't use all that much.
That sparc server is fast though, REALLY fast, it's really a shame to use it as a server, maybe i'll run it as a desktop later.
