Compaq AP550
Pentium III (Coppermine) @ 733MHz x2
256 RDRAM (Rambus) @ 600MHz ----- Yes, I know I should make it at least 512...
nVidia Ge-Force 5500FX, 128MB, (overclocked :) )

9GB Compaq Atlas SCSI HDD
Compaq CD-Rom
LG CD-RW + DVD (Combo)
Intel Integrated Audio (on the mobo)
Intel 82559 Fast Ethernet LOM with Alert on LAN (on the mobo)
some flopy (again Compaq I gues, I practicaly don't use it though :) )

Monitor - HP71, 17' ---- perhaps soon will change to a LCD like Samsung 713N (higher priority than the RAM, I don't want to wear glasse you see )
So basicaly I'm all over HP you see...
And I got all that (except the Ge-Force) second-hand about more than 1 year ago for about 250-300$ :)
And yes it worked all out of the box in Ubuntu :)

I have this athlonxp 2500+ which runs rock solid at 3200+ (220x10MHz) with an OEM fan cooler running at 2000RPM (gotta love this /sys/bus/i2c thing!!!), an old radeon 8500, 512MB or RAM, 2 seagate disks... pretty common stuff, and I'll be happily sticking with it for the next uhm ten years at least :)

One of the reasons I really like Ubuntu (and Linux systems) in general is that even though they function much better than XP, they can still run fairly well on sytems like mine.

I'm sure they love the free advertising (http://yahoo.businessweek.com/technology/content/nov2005/tc20051118_333155.htm) as well. I've found other retailers who offer comprarable prices (e.g. Page Computers (http://newsite.pagecomputers.com/store/Default.asp), Provantage (http://www.provantage.com/), Buy.com (http://www.buy.com), to name a few). Newegg's blg plus is the consumer ratings/comments area for each product they sell.

Unfortunatly they are part of the same company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newegg) who owns ABS Computers (http://www.labbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=920023 02). I bought my current PC from ABS. (http://www.labbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=920023 02) And to put it briefly, I will never buy from them again (http://tinyurl.com/a72bl).

Therefore I have no desire to support their company in any way. They stink.

Watercooling sounds nice, but I've often thought things could get really ugly if something sprung a lieak. :-)

There's been a couple recent upgrades. My Ubuntu box is now:

1 - ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Mainboard
4 - Samsung 256MB PC3200 RAM
1 - Athlon 64 3500+ Venice
1 - WD360GD 36GB Raptor HD
1 - WD740GD 74GB Raptor HD
1 - Benq DW-1640 DVD Writer
1 - Old Toshiba DVD-ROM
1 - MSI NX6600GT-TD128E 128MB PCI-E w/Video-in TV &DVI
1 - Gigabyte Wireless LAN Card (came with a Gigabyte mainboard I bought a while ago)
1 - Enermax 460W w/Dual Cooling Fan power supply
1 - Antec Super Lanboy case

Needs more hard drive. The mainboard has a SATA2 socket, so I'll probably pick up a Western Digital WD2500JS 250GB 8MB SATA2 drive to give me some breathing room.

AMD Sempron

Cost: $180.00
That's it, it was a bare bones system and I like to build my own boxes

Here are the specs of that computer today:
AMD Athlon XP

1 x DVD-+R/RW dual layer drive
still use onboard sound as I am hearing impaired and don't care about sound
still use onboard LAN

Value: I estimate it at more than $1,500.00, though it didn't cost me anywhere near that :)

Heres some of the new server Im workin on. I removed 2 5" and floppy drive bays to add more HD space. I have 5 now but I will add 2 more when they get back from RMA.
I also added a second front 120mm fan (still need to install the exhaust one). I also have round IDE cables comming.

In the end this is WAY more power than my home server needs to be. My old 950mhz AMD went up (mobo actually) so when I got new cheap parts it was still alot of power.
If anyone wants to know the parts Ill edit this post.

The Ubuntu sticker came from the official .EPS. Its vinyl like car graffix. I work at a sign shop so I made it and some more (smaller) to go on cars and laptops.
If you want to do this you can take the .EPS to any sign shop like "Fast Signs" or "Signs By Tomorrow" and get 'em cut pretty cheap.

ATI Radeon 9600XT (Giving a hell of a hard time to Install) Only good thing, can watch and record TV off it. Gamings wise, not as good as it once was.

Yeah, those PowerMacs were pretty pimp. I used to work with them in Film Production class back in high school. At the time they blew away any PC I had ever used.

The PC I've been using for the last couple of years is:

Pentium III 1 Ghz
1 GB of SDRAM
60 GB Hard Drive
Nvidia GeForce2 64 MB
A really old CD-R drive
17" ViewSonic monitor.

:), I remember my powerpc macs days too, we used them in our design/vid editing class.

2 x 160Gb Seagate SATA hard drive
2 x 250Gb Seagate SATA hard drive
Plextor PX-720A
Some DVD-ROM drive that I can't remember the model or brand of.

I'll probably add a PX-760SA as my burner, use the 720A for reading only and use the generic DVD-ROM for some other computer, everything else can wait for now but I'll definitely replace the CPU with an AMD64 and the X800 with something in PCI-E by nVidia, which will obviously mean getting a new motherboard. Wouldn't mind one of those modular PSUs, but that's obviously not top priority.

Apart from that I have a couple older machines kicking about, and a few incomplete pieces of kit.

I am jealous. I want a 7800 GT and a Athlon X2. Actually I plan to get a X2 in a few months then I can start saving to replace my 6600 GT. I won't complain too much because my Athlon 64 3200 clocked at 2.2 Gigs is pretty fast, for a single core. ;)

See my sig... built it myself a few weeks ago. Ran a large optimization problem the other day (in Fortran), one of the two cores was working 100% for an hour or so (they were alternating every few minutes), while the other one allowed me to use the computer for other tasks as if nothing else happened... I use this for writing the internet and some email.

I recently aquired an external cdromdrive so I am thinking of installing the extra 32 mb and installing feather linux (http://featherlinux.berlios.de).

I also use a home made from scrap parts, pentium 166 mmx at my parents house.
It has 64 mb of memory, a cdrom and a 4 gb hardrive.
I use feather on this machine.

Mine's not impressive for current system specs. It impresses that Ubuntu can run on older systems perfectly fine. I do a lot of development work on it, so it proves you don't have to have a monster system to make Ubuntu work for you.

System 1
CPU - P-III 733Mhz
RAM - 192Mb PC-133
Video - Intel810
Sound - Via AC'97
NIC - 3Com 3C905-B - God I love this card
Modem - A Lucent/Agere Winmodem that I just can't get to work
OS - Ubuntu 5.10

System 2
CPU - Dual Pentium Pro 200Mhz
RAM - 512Mb PC-100
Video - Trident something or other. Had to configure xorg.conf manually to get X to display on it at 8 bit/800X600 resolution.
No Sound
NIC - 3Com 3C905-B
RAID - HP Netraid, RAID 0 3X3 9Gb drives
OS - Ubuntu 5.10

Pretty redundant thread, but I run an OLD
AMD 750 MHz, 100MHz FSB
256 MB Ram
240 GB HD total (Maxtor garbage)
ATI all in wonder 32MB (haven't bothered to look into getting tv in/out working because I don't have cable)
My favourite part is my speaker system, which my mother bought for me when I went into 3rd year university. H/K with a huge woofer that is fun to play with. It does the "blow a peice of paper across the room" trick.

Aye i will do, however i dont expect to have it anytime soon, Very expensive to build that one will be, wanting to use an athlon FX57, apprently it has a good overclocking potential, and to do that it means watercooling, which is expensive. I think this system will be more end of year tbh with you. Or atleast 3-5months. Its the system i wished i build last year instead of ^^^system2. Which i might sell on ebay to generate some of the cash for the new one. (Counterstrike will never have had it so good :D)

Well your practically taken 1.2 ghz leap.... it will offer some improvement, but generally (with experience from celerons, id leave that core behind and either wait for intels new preslor core, or buy a prescott 3.0+ghz, that will offer a more significant improvement, Now your video card the old days back in GF4, go for the 6800, that offers a major jump in terms of video power, however ask your self do you play games on ur linux machine?... do you need to have a powerfuller card?......

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m with Centrino processor and it runs great with Ubuntu. I can watch about 4-6 videos at the same time with no glitcges, something I could not do before when I was running XP. You could tell my laptop was out of shape running XP.

I am keeping Ubuntu.

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 333FSB (Barton) socket 462

ltsp client box:
AMD K6-2 450Mhz @ 374Mhz (unknown core) socket 7
256MB PC100
PCI PT75 (chip is a S3 Virge/DX) 4MB

The ltsp client's MB supported speed maxes out at 300Mhz with a 4.5 multiplier @ 66Mhz but the jumpers allow the FSB to be maxed out at 83Mhz. Since the processor and memory is designed for a 100Mhz bus the chipset is the only thing that is really OC'ed. This baby hasn't locked up yet...except for that time i unplugged the HDD when it was on. hey the hdd is the only moving part in this guy and only makes noise during r/w operations.

500 MHZ PIII
Upgraded to 256 MB ram
CD and floppy drives (no burner)
13.3 inch display
Wifi
(Laptop just used for surfing and email... very handy! :) )

I built all of these machines with the exception of the laptop obviously, but I have upgraded the ram and replaced the keyboard on it. Handy for its mobility. I built the gaming rig a few months before Doom 3 came out. It was pretty high end in its day. I was dual booting Ubuntu on the gaming machine but could not get the 9800 pro to work with Ubuntu... and believe me, I tried! I built the Ubuntu rig out of spare parts I had from previous builds and picked up a few parts for it on ebay. Thats why it has such a small HDD, its what I had available. It works great and I like having the dedicated machine for Ubuntu, eventually I would like to switch them all to Ubuntu but I have lots to learn first :D . I also had an old emachine with Ubuntu on it that I gave my Mom and Dad for email and surfing. All four of my current machines are networked together and connected to a high speed DSL connection. I love my hobby :D ... now if I could just think of something productive to do. :)

Notes:
I wanted to install a Hauppauge tuner card and a SoundBlaster card, but with the AGP video card and the slot fan, I don't have room to install anything else. I plan to upgrade the power supply to something in the 400w-500w range and I will eventually install an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice to take advantage of the faster speed and inclusion of the SSE3 instructions. For the new CPU, I am going to use the Arctic Silver Ceramique compound and a Thermaltake orb cooler. I would also like to replace the stock case fan with something that's a bit more powerful and has a blue LED (to match the blue LED on the front of the case).

Hardware support is pretty much perfect with the exception of the integrated video. This computer ships with the Via K8M800 video processor and Linux support for that GPU is atrocious, thus I upgraded to the PNY video card. Other than the integrated video, everything is detected out-of-the-box by Dapper and the video card is supported with the nvidia-glx package.

I followed the link for more info. You bought this bare bones. Did you add the additonal hardware to it yourself?

I like the blue keys. Cool and different.

Here's my computer corner. Most of the stuff you see came of ebay for pennies e.g. the Fujitsu-Siemens Trend complete with 500mb ram for 21 euros needed only a CD (which I found in a dustbin!). The only thing I buy new is motherboards at the moment you can get ASRock K7VT4A pro for about 30 - 35 euros.
