Have you tried installing the mp3 codec (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats#head-7dc8d31ff5c7ccda3d326c0c17763853d296dc07)?

The method Warbread is suggesting will work fine, but it will also install other codecs you may not need (though most people would like them in the long run). If you just want mp3 support do
sudo apt-get install lame liblame0 lame-extras

sudo apt-get install lame liblame0 lame-extrasJust to update this, with 8.10, you need libmp3lame0 rather than liblame0 (which is no longer in the repository). lame-extras also no longer seems to be in the repositories.
