Gnome's philosophy is to keep things simple.

You can change your theme for GNOME. Just look for some themes at gnome-look.org (http://gnome-look.org)

Just change your theme. If you're not happy with Gnome, try KDE. sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

At gnome-look.org you want to look at the gtk2 themes and try installing some of those. You can also install new metacity themes to change the look of window borders. This might be useful: http://justanothertechblog.blogspot.com/2007/03/quick-guide-on-customizing-ubuntu.html

Here is a tool I found very helpful.
Art Manager.
Go to Add/Remove and type that in and download it. Then download themes till your hearts content.

You can skin XMMS (an awesome music player) but it's no longer in the repos for some reason.

xmms is cool, but as of hardy, no longer supported. that's ok. gutsy is pretty mature now and you can still get xmms.

Do you want just change the theme of apps? If thats the case you may have a hard time. Most Gnome apps take on your selected gtk theme, providing a uniform look to the desktop.

before recommending a change to KDE you should point out the fact that it's not just going to change the way things look. The entire GUI is different.

Moved to Recurring Discussions.
The visual style of Gnome is really very customizable. It does take more effort than downloading a Firefox or Opera skin, but it's not so hard, and there pre-made themes available. If you don't like the default look in Ubuntu, experiment with other styles.

Apps like audacious, mplayer, songbird, firefox, opera, and vlc can be "skined" independently of the gtk theme. I think that's what this poster is looking for, skinable apps... not gtk themes
