Hi, this is my first post on these forums. I wasn't sure where to put this thread but I decided to put it here in the end.

So I have the latest version of Ubuntu, 8.04. I burned it onto a CD and I load it up. I choose to try Ubuntu (live cd) without affecting my computer. It loads the linux kernal, then it says Loading please wait...(or something) in the upper left corner for a second, then its the Ubuntu loading screen, (with the image and the loading bar) Then it just comes to a command prompt, telling me to type help for help. I have no idea how to actually start the operating system, and I have used a previous version of Ubuntu before with it working absolutely fine and satisfactory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Maybe test the CD for errors, as that can halt things. But ending up at the command prompt? Hmmm... dunno... but maybe see what happens if you go to install via text mode, which is now an option on live CDs. But at the prompt see if the commands startx and/or sudo gdm do anything.

Giving us your specs could make things easier, if you don't mind. :)

Ok well, I did try startx at the command prompt, didn't work. I tried to install by pressing escape at the menu, that didn't work. I know my computer can run Ubuntu fine, but specifically what specs do you need?

What happened when you typed in 'startx'?

Never mind, I forgot to read your post all the way through, my bad. This is most likely a bug with 8.04, you may just have to downgrade until a fix is released.
