ubuntu postfix+mailx

I'm the newbie of the ubuntu,i use vmware, and i using posfix+mailx to send mail

i follow the basic step,now i can send the mail from root to linux
but how can i send to the internet email(send to gmail)
and i just test "send" function, can i avoid install pop3 server??
the advanced configuration is quite diffcult

Take a look at Zimbra. You can get a VMware appliance already configured and just add it to your machine as another VM. Much easier than mucking around with Postfix et al.
