does anyone know of a software that:

-can record MIDI
-is free
-can edit what i record

The big guy on the block for midi is Rosegarden, but there are lots of others that are lighter and perfectly capable too (such as Muse). Check out the MIDI Software section of http://linux-sound.org/ for a larger listing.

Ardour will soon be midi capable too, and when it is I'm sure it's power will astound!

even hydrogen can record MIDI

I use rosegarden for drumming purposes.
