As ID Software seems to support our OS of choice and released both DOOM3 and it's expansion for it, I was wondering if a Linux version of (what it seems) the far better game Quake IV was on it's way to? Has anybody heared something on this, on Quake's homesite the specs are a 2000 or XP OS but I don't wan't to trust this :). /// Freddan

Came out today. From what I experienced, it works much better (loading times better, and no stutter when it autosaves) than windows, but occaisonally my game pauses for about 4 seconds. The sound keeps going though, so if you are ina dialogue the teamate willl keep talking. In MP though your screwed, as you die being frozen for that long.

My game was totally thrashing my hard-drive a ton (I only have 512mb of RAM), so I apt-get installed blackbox and used blackbox instead of GNOME and Quake 4 run muuuch better.
:)
(I also kicked it down to low quality setting, but I think blackbox freed up a lot of ram...)

Other than that though, I don't experience any of the problems you describe... my sound is fine...

In terms of gameplay what are your overall impressions of Quake 4?

How does it compare with half-life 2 (that game sets the benchmark for me)

Is this a native version delivered from Raven and ID Software? and if that's the case, do you get it while buying the win version? /// Freddan

You buy the windows version, then download the Linux installer.

You buy the windows version, then download the Linux installer.

Or buy from one of the many places that actually sell the GNU/Linux port.

Say what? I was under the impression ID hadn't shipped actual Linux boxes for a long time now because they hardly made any money. The buy windows version and download linux installer combo has been the norm for as long as I've been watching. Link?

The game? I love it, but everyone seems to hate it who really loved the older quakes. I don't get it at all, I have played all of the quakes sans 3 extensively, but I have played the Q3 demo with bots for about 20 hours if you add up all the time.

Single player is amazing! Its like a mix of good old Quake II with some new school realism, the only thing I dislike is the whole vechicle portion. Wasn't too keen on that, but I have only seen the tank part, not the mech part. The SP owns, many people agree on this.

They say the MP is aletdown though. Its basically a remake of Quake 3 style. Like the Quake 1 remake "Deathmatch Classic" if you like Steam games. I loved DMC, and I love this now.
