i like all three versions ... but it is always better to have more splash versions to change them according to your mood. :)

...and according to who may be looking over your shoulder as you login.

Heh.. I think that I like that better then the <ahem> controversial ones I agree...I've been wondering how to get back to the pre-RC splash/login displays, but these should work quite nicely.

...[snipped]...
To install:
Goto Computer > Desktop Preferences > Login Screen Setup
Goto the "Graphical Greeter Tab" Select install and choose the GDM-ubuntu.tar.gz.tar file then select the theme in the right colum.
I've followed your instructions, but when I select the GDM-ubuntu.tar.gz.tar file, it errors with "Not a theme archive - Details: not a tar.gz or tar archive."

I downloaded the files to a subdir in my home dir, as my "normal" login user - do I need to diddle the permissions or something?

Thanks!

Mark

sudo cp ubuntu-splash.png /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/

Didn't work for me... Any Ideas... the file copied... but looks like a shortcut, and won't come up on login.

In defense of the more 'controversial' wallpapers and gdm themes, my mother likes them. In fact, the whole 'human' theme concept is the thing that initially drew my attention to Ubuntu in the first place. The current calendar wallpaper is about my favorite wallpaper ever to come with a distro.

Where do I change the default "dark brown" background color behind the gnome splash. Customizing for my 12 year old daughter.

System -> Administration -> Logon Screen Setup -> Standard greeter, click "Background color" button on lower-right.
