I have a Thinkpad R52 1858 1.73Ghz with the 915GM video chip and 1.5GB RAM.
Since the time of Ubuntu 6.10/Wine 2.30 when I bought the Thinkpad new, I have been trying to get a decent game frame rate out of it.
Under Window XP SP2 is gives 20-30fps in WoW, and 18-20fps in Guildwars. Under Ubuntu 8.04 with the latest Wine package, 5fps for WoW under -opengl, and 3fps for GW -dx8.
I have tried various tweaks suggested on many threads here and on other forums. I have tried PCBSD 1.3-1.51 OpenSuse, even it's new beta, various versions of KDE and Gnome, the i810 and the current Intel x11 drivers, and XP is always 400-600% faster. I tried renice the Wine/Wow process to -20 no change. At best the Wine process uses only 33% of CPU.
I have run out of things to try, can anyone suggest where I should look to try and claw back the missing fps? How can this be solved methodically?
