View Full Version : [xubuntu] 8.04 on a fakeRAID does not boot after installation

Hello everybody.

I have installed 8.04 on a fakeRAID using dmraid. I wrote menu.lst for the first time by hand, and I think I made some mistakes there.

The system is a 64 bit xubuntu 8.04 which was installed on a RAID 1. There are three partitions, nvidia_eiihehac1 for /boot, nvidia_eiihehac2 for swap and nvidia_eiihehac3 for /. I don't get any errors while attempting to boot, it just doesn't boot.

Anyone got a clue?

Thanks

This is my menu.lst

I used the guide here (http://wiki.eyermonkey.com/My_Ubuntu_%287.10%29_Installation) with a few stages skipped since my partitions were already set up and Grub didn't require a manual install, this part in particular might be what you need:

# move some important system stuff over to the new installation of Ubuntu
# Note: You may get errors about some of these things already being done for you. That's fine.
# Just do them all to be safe. I have commented the ones were not necessary for me.
# replace <RAID_SET_NAME> with the name that you wrote down earlier. The same goes for <PART_NUM>
sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/mapper/<RAID_SET_NAME><PARTITION_NUM> /target # for me this was "sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/mapper/via_bjgffdcjia2 /target"
sudo mount --bind /dev /target/dev
sudo mount -t proc proc /target/proc # was already done
sudo mount -t sysfs sysfs /target/sys

# copy some necessary files from the live CD over to the new installation of Ubuntu
sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /target/etc/apt
sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /target/etc

# now point the terminal to start working with your new installation instead of the live CD
sudo chroot /target

# update the new installation and install dmraid and grub
apt-get update
apt-get install dmraid

The initial install of dmraid during the install only temporarily installs it for the LiveCD so you need to manually install it onto your fresh install and it should boot up afterwards.

Yes, I did that. I started once again from scratch, this time with this tutorial (http://ohioloco.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=630644). Everything went fine, but when I try to boot the system, I get grub error 15.

The last part of my menu.lst looks like this:

## ## End Default Options ##

title xubuntu 8.04
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root=/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdcceacj3 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic
