Absolute total beginner trying to install a downloaded Ubuntu onto an ex school computer which has had Windows removed and just has a C:/ prompt - doing DIR on that gives me command.com and nothing else.
I got it to boot from CD after having to remove CMOS battery to remove CMOS password which I didn't have.
I know ZILCH about Linux- fairly experienced with Windows.
I have created a bootable CD from the ISO image using recommended method and verified the files and begun the install - "Start or Install Ubuntu" it lets me choose the language, and begins the install - where the instructions say "this can take some time" then the orange bar begins - then goes full length - then I get a picture of a arty looking bird with a big beak - and that's where it still is a long time later (3/4 of an hour? - only the screen has by now gone completely blank. I never get to the LiveCD Ubuntu desktop. The CD drive is still whirring away with its light going on and offbut there is no other activity.
I've tried this twice with the same result. What do I do next please?
1.1GHz Celeron machine. Not too sure about the rest of it as it is an ex school machine with no data.
Many thanks.
