Starting Nov. 1st, its the fifth annual National Novel Writing month, and I'm going to be participating for the second time.

What it is, is a month set aside for writing a 50,000 word novel. It starts Nov. 1st, and goes to the end of the month And don't let the name fool you. Its an international event.

This year, I'll be using either AbiWord or OpenOffice to write my "novel" with. Hopefully this time I'll see it to its conclusion.

For more information, go to http://www.nanowrimo.org.

EDIT: Title should be National NOVEL writing month.

Good luck. I do all of my writing with Vim at first, in order to focus on the content, and then pretty it up with OpenOffice. I'm working on a short story that's turned into a novelette called "Render Unto Caesar" right now.

Vim, huh. That's actually a very good idea. I may have to do that..

Well, you don't have to use Vim if you don't want to bother learning how to use it. Gedit, Emacs, or nano will do. Whatever you're comfortable with; just use plain text for rough drafts. I use Vim because I learned how to use vi in college when studying CS, so I'm used to it.

I'm starting to teach myself vim.

I actually kind of like it. emacs seems like too much, and if I bail on vim I can always go back to nano. (I used to use pine/pico lots at college)
