Well if you make a full install of OSX in a VM, yes. That is not the same as running iChat in Linux.

Yes, but I think it's important that he knows that it's possible.

is there an Ubuntu equivalent to iChat? If you mean "better" then yes. Look into Pidgin or Kopete

If he's looking for multiconference A/V as stated in the original post, he's going to be disappointed with Pidign or Kopete, as they don't support such protocol.
And AFAIK, the only app to support video on linux is Skype, and I'm not sure if it supports multiconferencing.

Actually, kopete supports video protocols. The main issue here is that it is a qt app, so it will not look as nice as other apps in Ubuntu.

Pidgin works, but I'd be hard pressed to agree on it being better.
Better yet is Adium, an amazing app for OS X, and uses the same libraries as Pidgin; I miss it dearly.
It's like a super fast Pidgin on skinnable steroids.

I can see that version 2.0 for Linux is available. This must the first version of Skype which supports video for Linux. Am I right?

If you notice, I was also not replying to the OP.

Yes and it works well. Though there are some install difficulties for 64bit linux.

Hey the reason i'm getting linux is to run windows and mac apps.
Not trying to bust you, just trying to give you a little perspective...
It seems you have a bit of a wrong impression... You shouldn't 'get into linux' expecting to run windows and mac apps. If you want to run windows apps, they are designed to run in windows, run them in windows for the best results. If you want to run mac apps, they're designed to run in OS X, run them in OS X for best results.
There are things like wine and emulators, but they won't yield the result you're looking for 90% of the time. There are virtual machines, but that's very similar to just running the program on the OS it was designed for.
Don't get me wrong. Explore linux, learn everything you can. But expect linux to be linux, not windows and OS X.

I read it as Graevion wanted to interact with windows and osx apps? If that is the case no problem. twinkle ekiga gizmo wengophone etc for video and voip and pidgin amsn ayttm kopete etc for chat. Loads and loads if you get into cli stuff or look out with the repos.
