I obtained a copy of the warty warthog release, both install and live CDs, pretty much on a whim. I played around with the live CD for a bit, but honestly, it didn't appeal to the laziness in me, so it went into a desk drawer. This morning, my Windows PC went into a state of absolute vapor lock. On this PC was almost 5 years worth of photographs (4.2 gigs), and over 2 gigs of purchased music. I tried to write them to CD, but Windows couldn't find the CDROM drive. I tried to move them to an online storage, but Windows couldn't find my server.

After I got over my initial panic, I went to a closet and pulled out an older PC that I'd retired about a year ago. I did a full install of warty on this computer, then put the live CD in the whacked out one. It ran beautifully, and the live CD allowed me access to the image and audio files on windows. Using a Nikon D50 SLR with a 1Gb SD card as a ferry, I moved the files a gig at a time to the warty computer. Warty then had not the least problem in creating backup CD's for me. And, it wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. I've been on windows since it was created, but I'm sold now and ready to learn some new tricks. You will probably see me asking lots of questions though, because I'm BRAND new at this :)

I emailed Microsoft and told them they were fired.....

Congratulations. You'll find people are fairly receptive to newbies asking questions. Welcome to Ubuntu.
