Hey everyone,
Quake 4's popping up in stores today in the U.S. and either tomorrow or the next day (20th) in Canada, and I've from someone who has the game that there aren't any Linux binaries on the CDs... (maybe someone else can verify this?)
So, has anyone tried running Quake 4 under WINE?
(Doom3 works under WINE, so I'd expect Quake 4 to as well...)

Be patient. Id's usually pretty good about porting their games to Linux; wait a few months and you'll probably be able to download the Quake4 Linux binaries.

Sooner than that, someone from ID was quoted as saying a week or two after release, if it wasn't ready by the time quake 4 was duplicated.

So this means we buy the store version, download the linux binaries and install with our store bought keys? I installed UT2004 from the disk.

Yeah, but Doom 3 required, well, exactly what you're describing.
And it's just the binaries that you download. You need all the models, textures, etc. from the game disc.

One slight technical note: You don't actually "install" the game with your key, you just enter it when you fire up the game...
Also, there should at least be files for dedicated servers within a few days, followed by the Linux binaries within a few weeks...
Edit: Actually, silly me... id never releases "dedicated files" for their games... so you'll get Linux dedicated servers when we get the Linux binaries. :)

Actually asking for the CD key is the first thing it does before installing. I read as Linux gamers that a linux binary was expexted with in two weeks of release. I'm sure it will be the same as Q3 and D3. just copy some pak files from CD/DVD the run the .run file to install!
