Well Ladies and gents, its back to it.
Over the next 2 weeks, Artificial and I will be working heavily on getting a games list together for the First Offical UbuntuForums WAN party. The servers will be in Atlanta , GA , compliments of yours truely. What we need from you, the gamer user base of the Ubuntu Forums , is what do you want to play?
I know that this type of event was planned by Jdodson before, and Ill be working my hardest to make this type of event both regular and a reality. But we need your help.

I chose cube, as that runs well enough on my current pc. SuperMaze would be a pretty good laugh too.

<3 Wesnoth =)
Been a fan of Wesnoth since, 0.6... On top of that I know it'll work on my Box where as Nexuiz I know won't ;)

Is there any way armagetron can get added to that list? :D

I started playing Wesnoth just for the first planned one, so I am going to have to go with that. Nexuiz and Schorched3d are also quite good.

I'd be up for nexiuz if I can get it running again.

BzTanks would be cool, but the version on APT is horribly bugged (shots don't register, making the game impossible to play).
My vote goes to Cube; it runs great on older systems, and it's still a blast to play.

Nexuiz all the way but there would need to also be an euro server also for me to participate...
I'd love a 1v1 tourney :)

CTF-BL-1V1JOUST WITH THE ZARK ARMS SERVER PACKAGE, OF COURSE!
But then I really don't want everyone here to hate me, so I think I'll retract that. lol.

I think it's safe to assume that any 1v1 map with 15 people on it will end up being a spam fest. Have a great weekend, oh Exhalted one!

To be honest I think you're severely limiting the whole thing by restricting it to only GPL'ed games. I play ET in Unbuntu on a regular basis, and just bought Quake4. As shooters they far outdo both Cube and Nexuiz. Also, if you wish to involve the community in an FPS, playing Nexuiz, cube, or even bzflag at more than a 100 ping (50 in Nexuiz, the netcode is bad) is nigh impossible. ET/RtCW and certain versions of Q3 come equipped with anti-lag that would greatly help. The point is, it'd be much easier to get people if you supported the full range of games (note i'm speaking in FPS terms) that people actually play rather than limiting them on an ideological basis.

I can understand not going with quake or ut2004 as you can't expect everyone to run out and buy it just for the wan but ET is free to download and play. So is america's army, but I"m not sure you would be able to create a server(I think you can).
I would vote for ut2004 if it was on there, but as I said, I wouldn't expect everyone to run out and buy it.

Of the games listed, which of them is actually like an fps? Not "your in a tank, can't aim for dooky but can fire all you want" fps, but honest to goodness fps.

Downloaded and played Nexuid and Legends. Legends is way more fun, imho. Scorched 3d like so many other games couldn't wouldn't refused to install. Being of limited cranial functionallity, it is beyond me as to why.
How about a 24 hour a day 32 man server running CTF-BL-1V1-Joust-ATM with the full Zark Arms and Zark Redeemer package?

I voted nexuiz, but I'd also like cube (didn't see it in the list when i read through it.. i was even looking for it, lol). ET and especially the TC:E mod would be awsome too, and it's free. also, ET plays ok at higher pings (~200) whereas fast games like quake and its clones just don't work that well.. and this could be a problem for me here in Australia.

Why not add an RPG to it, like Crossfire. I'm considering setting up a server on my little server I have here at home. I had a Neverwinter Nights server running on it as well at one point in time, but unfortunately the server is a dual 466 with 384mb of ram, so it can't handle a big module very well. But amazingly, it did handle a Pool of Radiance module and 6 players all at once quite well.

Is this ever going to happen? I played wesnoth online a couple months ago to get ready for this and it was lots of fun.
I might be able to host a few games, if that is what we need to do.

I'll do Nexuiz if it'll run on my bum of a computer, otherwise, all I can do is Wesnoth.
Idea: Why not have two or three tourneys? Most people seem to prefer either Nexuiz, Wesnoth or Cube. Make them all happy.

Next will be Nexuis, 'cause it looks like a winner in this poll.
I would love it to be UT2K4, just 'cause... :p
Thanks for your time & effort.

NetPanzer has got suprisingly few votes. Try it if you haven't yet people, it's a simple and action-packed RTS focusing on the battles where you try to capture command points (which also let you do a simple form of tank production) :)

I've just tried it! - It's in the universe repo! (None of the prefered games are?)
If I could change my vote, it would be netpanzer!

My current list for the 3 games list choice is
Nexiuz
Scorched3d
Wesnoth
Id be willing to add another to the list , NetPanzer seems a good RTS choice, a little more active RTS than Wesnoth is, which is heavily turn based.

If it does happen I hope there will be plenty of time to install the game of choice.
And possible a help forum focusing on the games of choice so everyone can get up a running in time. I'll give Nexuiz a go soon to see how my system holds up.
Also the location of the Servers - Will my ping be OK I'm not sure if I would even be able to play if it happens.
I've got a 512 kbps adsl connection in Aussie land. (Australia)

I don't ever recall a game that ran when I went to it's folder. You mean when you tried to execute the startup file? If so make sure it has permission to execute. To do this right click on it, go to properties, select permissions and check the "execute" box under "user".
