its very strange, if i hold down shift, the letters do not type
but if i press caps capital letters do come out, and i can't type punctuation marks for which shift is needed, can anyone help

Check System>Prefs>Keyboard make sure you've got the correct one active. You can test all the keys there too.

I installed a new program and a similar thing happened
I presume you have checked the keyboard setting on the preferences menu to see if anything has changed

nothing looks off in keybpard preferences, keyboard model, as this is a laptop, says generic intel pc, the layout is uk, i have tried selecting reset to defaults, but the shift key still is not functioning as normal, i was playing around with compiz fusion yesterday, could that have done soemthing
