I have been using Ubuntu since version 6.10. The only complaint I have is that my computer raises high cpu laods without reason.
My computer is a Pentium4 @ 2.66GHz, with 1.5GB DDR Ram and a GeForce 6200 with 256MB.
Most of the experience is very sluggish.
On a clean system with 8.04LTS and with the latest nvidia driver intall (from System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers), I can run visual effects with amazing speed (for example, the cube rotation, and window selection, and wobbly windows are doing very fast!), but the computer raises very high cpu load on "simple stuff", like moving the scrollbar on Firefox, or moving a window arround (with "wobbly" turned off), or simply doing... nothing! Even if I leave the computer sitting idle on an empty desktop without apps running, I can constantly see a 30-50% cpu usage, which raises up to 100% if a do the simplest thing, even if I move the mouse arround the screen.
I believe that the cpu is utilized to perform action that normally should go to the GPU. However, 3D effects are amazingly fast and I can't give an explanation why the computer can do 3D very well, but goes sluggish in simple 2D stuff.
The high cpu usage slows down everything, and the experience is very poor. For example, it takes several seconds to open a new Firefox window, and I can actually see the window's component drawing one by one, and in the same system with XP I can open a new Firefox instantly in a few fractions of the second and the response is blazing fast.
I would really like to hear some good suggestions! thank you!
