Hi, I'm a Linux and Ubuntu newbie, and have recently moved. With my new home and my router's physical location, it will not be feasible for me to use a wired connection for my aging desktop, a 5 yr old Dell Dimension 8200. I hope to build my own system at some point, but I can't say when the green gods are gonna allow that, so I'd like to find a wireless PCI card that will work with minimal headaches for my current machine.
My router is a D-Link DIR-655, so draftN compatibility would be nice, but my online research to this point indicates that Ubuntu/Linux doesn't play nicely with draftN. With all the problems I've had with my Broadcom 4318 card in my laptop (hopefully to be replaced soon, and recommendations on that would also be happily accepted), I would prefer a card that works with minimal hassle, even if it sacrifices potential transfer speed.
In about a month and a half of experimenting, I have completely erased windows from my laptop, and have a freshly installed, non-updated version of xp on my dual-boot desktop that I hope to never have to use again. Learning Linux, and specifically Ubuntu has become my main hobby of late, but I have just started and have a long ways to go, so I appreciate all the help of the community thus far, even though this is my first actual post. The wealth of information available online, considering the relatively small userbase is amazing. It's not been an easy migration, but it is exciting to realize that I can actually shed the costly MS windows that I used to think was absolutely necessary for my minimal home PC use. Thank you all.
P.S. I just accidentally shutdown this PC (was distracted with my laptop on a Skype call and forgot I hadn't posted this message), and restarted without internet connection, and was stunned to find my post still here. I assume it's Firefox3 at work, but Unbelievable!
