Whenever I try to install new updates through the update manager it just hangs and whenever I try to load synaptic that just hangs too. Help anyone?

Mine has recently been going slow. I've been monitoring my network through system monitor and it eventually starts downloading the updates. i hope its just the ubuntu servers side and not my install.

I am having issues as well with the Update Manager. I get all the way to Installing software and when I open up the Details arrow I have (Reading Database ...

This has been going on for 3 days now. I've tried rebooting, but no amount of time seems to help.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to update at the moment; the update speed bounces around alot, but most of the time it is about 1.5K (bits not bytes)

Try a different server for your software sources.

whenever I try to start any of the 'administrative applications' they just crash, so changing the server repositories through the gui isnt possible and i dont know how to do it through command lines.

Same here. I do not think it's a server issue-- update manager has to be killed.

The same here. I was able to login as root but now it doesn't allow me to do so. Whenever I login as root, the server will reboot.
Whenever I login as an user and try to update to new kernel, after I key in password and start updating, it reboot the server too.
I am guessing it has something to do with root accessing.

I'm having the exact same issue. I am using ubuntu 7.10.

Has anyone been able to figure out a solution?
