Okay, right now I'm running Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) on an iBook G3(750FX) Dual-USB. Also, I'm Dual-Booting into Ubuntu 6.10. I installed Ubuntu from a LiveCD .iso I downloaded from the RIT server.
I should be receiving both a 512MB RAM Module and an Apple Airport card in the post in a few days, and I'd just like to know how I'd go about getting Ubuntu to recognise and play nice with the Airport card.
Of course, being this is a G3 iBook, the Airport card is an actual 802.11b Airport card. It's not APExtreme.
Sorry, I'm a bit new at this sort of thing, so I don't know if I included all the information I should have.
If there's already a discussion out there that the forum's "search" bit missed (From my experience, forum searches miss quite alot) just point me to it. Much appreciated. ^^;;

the ubuntu version numbers are based on dates. 6.10 means 2006 october, so it is old an no longer supported. 8.04 (2008 april) has just come out. unless you have a stong reason for using 6.10, i suggets you try again with a new release.
the airport card should work fine. new releases have networkmanager (though avoid 7.10 as network manager was broken for some people). this makes setting up wireless pretty easy. you just click on the network icon in the top right of the screen, and choose a network.

Wasn't 6.10 the last version of Ubuntu available for the PPC architecture?

No; there have been releases for 7.04, 7.10, and now 8.04. To obtain a newer release, please refer to the sticky at the top of this thread (if you are interested): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=427714.

Ah, my mistake. I apologize. I had assumed the sticky was for the newer Intel Macs.
Doink.

No problem; just wanted to let you and any lurkers know. :-)
Airport card worked "out of the box" with 8.04 ppc. Dealing with minor sound irritants right now, otherwise couldn't be happier with what I'm seeing and doing (apart from the lack of system sounds, apps have sound with the PulseAudio stuff, so I'm not sweating it).

Without this thread I never would have known that the newer versions of the PPC ISO's were available. Thank you!

Hi,
I have a shell ibook 300mhz with an old Airport Card.
I tried 8.04 also but it's a lot slower on that machine.
I have trouble with my wireless though, maybe you can help me out:
the airport card / wireless interface does show up in the network manager.
I played around with the properties of the connection, tried all the stuff in the terminal that they tell you to do in the official 6.10 documentation - no results.
It just doesnt see any networks, and there are at least ten around me.
In the terminal I can see - when using one of the commands: Hermes I etc....on eth1 ...access point: NONE.
Thats where the problem is....any idea how to make it work?
thanks.
