I just did a fresh install of Hardy on a new PC but with a relatively old Sound Blaster Live 5.1 soundcard.

The soundcard worked fine since who knows when, and is still producing good quality sound, but I can't adjust the volume.

I tried every slider in alsamixer and gnome-volume-control. I even checked out the different pulseaudio utilities. No luck.

/proc/asound shows only one device.

I don't get any error messages when I start alsamixer.

Software volume adjustments in rhythmbox/totem/pulseaudio works.

It's as if alsa isn't connected to the hardware.

Any ideas?
