Hi,

How do I go from having a video file in some arbitrary format (that VLC recognizes fine) to putting it onto a CD/DVD in such a way that I can play it back on a normal DVD player? Is it as simple as converting it to a format that most DVD players can understand, and burning it to data, or is there a better way?

I think Brasero can do it, but I'm not really sure ...

devede seems to be the program i was looking for, thanks.

Is there a way to change any of the default settings for the program? I made a vcd file and it came out to be 780mb so it wont fit on a cd (im using a 700mb cd-rw)

Did you try SVCD?

yea it says the disk usage is 169% with svcd, i guess i'll have to get 2 cd-rw's and split the file in 2 parts...?

No you don't, just decrease bitrate til you get the right size.

Both, I use 128bit audio.
How long is is the movie and in what format?

The movie is an .avi and is 1:15:53 long. The audio bitrate for the file is already at 128bit so i prob shouldn't change that huh. it's 480x360 xvid mpeg-4, 30fps

Open it in Avidemux GTK+ in Add/Remove (all available application),
just copy video and sound (format AVI).
Then try Devede.

I tried the avidemux, Im not sure if i did it right though...i went to the calculater and made sure it was set to 80 min cd....then i clicked save and it saved a copy of the file...but when i imported that file into devedee i got the same result...it was too long.

What you told me earlier worked though, i used devede to adjust the video bitrate then i was able to get the size down and burned it. It skipped a little on one of my dvd players but i'll have to try another.

A movie (90 min) is normal 3 cd in SVCD

Dont do that, just choose on the left side,
copy video, copy audio, format AVI, and save.
You can try other formats (mpeg) and see if that work better.
And check your codec support,
