Did you go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects or did you make changes to your compiz settings?

Did you have a profile other than default saved under Preferences? If so, go back and select that profile.

If you turned off a lot options that were turned on by default, you can also click on the broom/sweep icon and it will reset that option back to the defaults.

If you changed your profile settings and saved them, I don't know any way to get them back to your custom settings.

what custom settings are you referring to? compiz settings?

if so go to appearance and choose extra everything should go back to where it was when you turned it off

if it doesnt just go to System-Prefrences-Advanced Desktop Effects Settings and click the checkmarks next to the ones you turned on before (they should still have the same settings as before)
