Splat!

Have a new machine and trying to install
Ubuntu i86 Desktop 8.04.
Choosing "Install" at the first menu I can
get to step 4 (partition editor) and it sees
nothing.
Set up partitions with GPartEd and tried again -
same result.
Removed all partitioning and let it go to the "live"
desktop, chose System>Admin-Partition Editor, and get
a message "No devices detected".
It's a brand new 500Gb Seagate HDD, fresh out of the
box. GPartEd can find it and work it. Why not Ubuntu?
Additionally - somewhat outside the park - I am also
trying to put Gentoo 2007 in a separate partition -
it doesn't recognize my on-board video (BioStar
P4M80-M4 mobo with S3 UniChrome Pro) or my monitor
(NEC MultiSync LCD 1700V), not sure which, but it
leaves me stranded at a command prompt after giving
me a "fix your GPM" message and I don't have a clue
what I need to do.
Can anyone help with this one as well? Or should I
wait until Gentoo 2008 comes out (it's in beta-2 now)?
TIA
