freeze

Hey I just installed ubuntu. It wouln't install unless i did the alternative text cd. Otherwise it would just freeze when it was loading. Now it installed but it freezes when it loads. It lets me enter my username and password then freezes right after that or when the wallpaper comes up. It usually leaves some part of the screen white with some colored lines in it. It doesn't freeze the system so i can't do anything though I can move the mouse around but thats it. If anyone has any help i would appreciate it.
