blank smb.conf file

i am trying to get something sorted with sharing. the directions i am following state to add some lines to the smb.conf file but when i bring it up it is completely blank.
any ideas why?

for some reason now it has come up and i haven't done anything different.

Hmmm in virtualbox my smb.conf suddenly is empty too and not working anymore?

Also I have problems with shared folders.. If I mount a directory they will be empty.. sometimes the files come back if you unmount them 0_o
