You may be running Gnash which isn't to good yet.

Go into Synaptic and install flashplugin-nonfree

If it is Gnash installed it should uninstall it. Make sure you stop and start FF

open synaptic and remove it from there. First search swf-dec and see if that has a green box next to it and remove it if it does, secondly try gnash or thirdly try flash reinstall flash.

I had the same problem and have removed everything apart from flashplugin-non free. I no longer get the grey play box but everything is still very choppy and slow, especially on you tube and bbc iplayer.
Someone else mentioned it might be because i have a single core computer and that the new adobe flash player might also be at fault.

I'm having trouble with flash as well. I just installed Firefox 3.0.1. Now it's not detecting the flash plug-in. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the nonfree plug-in and it's still not working. Is there anything else I can try?
