is there a way to get the sims on ubuntu, or perhaps a sims clone?

There's certainly no Sims clone available for Linux as far as I know, and I don't think it's possible to get it running in Wine.
You could try Cedega (http://www.transgaming.com/), but you have to pay for that.

if you are going to pay then use crossover. It works better than cedega plus the devs are the actual wine devs so it helps the free project. The Crossover devs are better at working with the community and more responsive than the cedega devs. So in my opinion it only makes sense to support crossover and let Cedega die the miserable death it deserves.

Or you could install XP in a virtual box (but graphics is limited) or dual-boot.

Personally I feel dual boot is the best way to go if you want to game as well :)
