View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] A virtual box install has messed up all my visual settings

Hi again!! Hopefully someone can help me with this mistake I've made.
I went to Synaptic Package Manager to install Virtual Box, and I clicked all installations with that name (I should be more selective in future...) A restart was required and on my Dual-boot screen that I usually have a couple of Ubuntu options then Windows, now there are a LOT of Ubuntu options (some say virtual for example).

The default one gave me a 640x480 screen with no sound, so I rebooted into several others and the best option I've found so far has sound and the best resolution I can select is less than what I had before (I'm now on 1024x768 ), and my Cube effect doesn't work any more. I removed all the virtual box installations from Synaptic, but that's made no difference, since whatever that has changed has stuck.

Can anyone suggest why this has happened? Is there a way to get back to my previous settings or do I have to set up my monitor and visual effects etc. again? (I hope not... I don't remember how I did most of it) How can I reduce that big list at my dual-boot screen?

I'm on Hardy 8.04 with a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop.

Any help much appreciated!!

I did some digging and it had disabled my NVIDIA graphics driver! I re-enabled it and now the resolution and cube effect are back no problem, but I'd like to understand why this happened if someone has any ideas? Also,
1) How do I reduce the list of different Ubuntu versions (it's all for the one distro installation) at the dual-boot screen.
2) Will this happen if I try to install virtual box again? (I'll go through a virtual box how-to next time and install from the terminal instead of blinding installing all dependencies from Synaptic next time)
Thanks!
