I played BG2 again recently, with loads of mods and extra npc's and stuff, it was really enjoyable. I also played BG1 using the BG2 engine using something called 'Tutu', which was really good.

As for FF, I've played them all since 7, with the exception of 9, has anyone played it?

Really it's Street Fighter 2 if we're all honest. Turbo that is. It's timeless. A classic pure videogaming experience that will never age. Gawd bless SDLMame!

Notable Point of Interest...

Street Fighter 2 is why my nose is a little bit crooked. That and an older sister who didn't take the sportsman-like approach to losing.

The Best Game Ever Made...

Human Experience

I mean, c'mon guys, it was designed anywhere from 6000 to several billion years ago, and the graphics STILL amaze me.

It's completely multi-platform, the story-line starts out a little bit linear but after you level up and get further into the game it's completely free-form as far as character development and storyline pioneering.

The soundtrack is a little bit lacking as far as consistency goes, I admit.

Also the controls and gameplay are a bit difficult to understand at times,

All in all though, a very well-made game, in my opinion at least.

My vote has to be the same :)

I also really enjoyed Oblivion, and it made some nice advances in the graphical and gameplay departments, but the story and setting took a step backward (at least in the main campaign). I've yet to play Fallout 3, but that looks really good as well.

Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES and not the All Stars version. Reason: This game made the most awesome improvements in a game ever. The powerups, the gameplay, the music, the graphics. Everything was great. I don't think I've seen a game that has made leaps and bounds like SMB 3. If there was one, I missed it. Plus I'm an old school gamer, so call me biased.

For me it was tron 2.0 for the PC and Tron 2.0 Killer apps under the Xbox console over here. Based on the movie way back in 82. I always loved the game due to it's unique idea of going inside the computer system itself. Too bad the game never got converted over to ubuntu linux. And they don't have the source code aailable to do so. It would have been nuce to worked on that in linux.

Did anyone mention the need for speed series?

But i would say my all time favourite is hexen 2 for the sheer creativity and mix of medieval, egyptian etc storyline and coupled with some stunning artwork and language used(especially in the egypt episode),i still play it and it still warms my eyes just looking at the artwork in the game.

I love quake 4 too ofcourse.

Looks like mips was an Amigan.

Can't believe I got right near to the end of this thread before someone mentioned Elite.

Now if David Braben could revamp the game to take advantage of todays graphics, add some missions ala Freespace style and when you land on a planet you could get involved in Metal Gear Solid style ground events.

Uber game. And don't forget the net attraction.

You got all 20 hearts and half magic, right? I love this game, every so often I pick it up again and figure I'll put some stupid limit on playing it, just to make it harder(like no sword upgrades after mastersword, that's a tough one, shame it has no effect on the fight with gannon(what's with that fight, I wanted to make it harder, but he still never hurt me :(), or, my personal favourite, no boomerang, it's amazing how much harder this makes the game). Just last week I completed it again without picking up any heart fragments, whole hearts only, by the end of the game I had I think it's 14 hearts(3 to begin, 1 from the sanctuary, 3 from the pendants, 7 from the maidens), didn't make it as hard as I hoped it would really.

Up until last week i would have said DOOM (the original) but now i have purchased left4dead i have changed my mind.

It is a top game where you have to work as a team just to survive. IMO no other game (fps) has successfully gotten strangers to work as a team ;)

I believe you there. I hate how my 'team mates' camp or hang back in CS:S while I inflict damage on another opponent and they hop in at the last minute or when I'm dead for the kill shot or knife with no ill effect to their healt status.

Not very sporting but I have on the odd occasion shot at my own camper mates so their health drops. I'm a bit tire of this Me, Myself & I attitude while I try and help whoever is in the poo :)

Hmm, hard to say.

RPG: Final Fantasy VII,VIII or X, Chrono Trigger

Fight games: Tekken 3 and V

FPS: Half Life 2, Counterstrike 1.6 and Counterstrike Source, CoD4

RTS: Age of Empires I and II, Command and Conquer Red Alert I and II

Platform games: Super Mario Bros I and III, Rayman, Crash Bandicoot

Racing: Gran Tourismo II

If I had to pick one out of the games that I listed, it would be Final Fantasy X.

VII and VIII were damn good, but FF X is just pure epicness.

The graphics were the best ever seen on the PS2, the story line was superb, the cut scenes were stunning. The gameplay was amazing.

I had finally beaten the game after 200+ hours. By beaten I mean defeated all enemies (not just the weak end boss, but the hidden uber bosses).

X-2 wasn't as good, mostly because Tidus was gone and so were the Aeons, but it was still pretty good. It started off a bit weak, but after you finished the game and figured out you can go down 100 levels in some dungeons to get to the superbosses all hell breaks loose.

Has to be Baldur's Gate. Part 1 is great for my introduction into RPG, Part 2 is just a awesome game I still install once in a while.

I'm a series kind of guy, the best games usually end up a series. That's what I love about games like Halo, Half Life 2, and even The Elder Scrolls. A more in depth story draws you into the game. Each of these series has a reputation that could go a long way.

Unfortunately I cannot give a hand to Fallout yet, becuase it took Bethesda to get their hands on it before the series became an worthwhile game. But I can see the Fallout series either going a long way, or the whole "Fallout" or Nuclear War theme games to be the next generation fad.

There are a lot of very good games. Most of which have been mentioned here.

But there are only a select few that I call great. And Best of those... it is hard to say. I'll have to split it into categories because it is like comparing apples and oranges.. I can't decide.

RPG: TES III: Morrowind (PC) easily
Honorable mentions: Zelda (original one, NES), TES IV: Oblivion (PC), Fallout 3 (PC)

RTS: Tie between Starcraft (PC) and Total Annihilation (PC) (The later of which also has the best music in a video game. Ever. /story)
Honorable mentions: Dune 2000 (PC), Red Alert (original, PC)

Action: Tie between Battletoads (NES) and Battletoads (Sega Genesis)

Fishing: Tie between The Blue Marlin (NES) and The Black Bass (NES)

FPS: Goldeneye (64)
Honorable mentions: Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (N64), Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion (N64), Halo (original, XBOX). These are easily second to Goldeneye, but there is a huge gap between these and any other FPS games. In addition, Halo is the only game in the Halo series that has a campaign mode that is worth playing... and not only that, it is amazing.

Racing: Mario Kart (N64)

Bah.

If you think there's a tie between Starcraft and TA for the #1, surely you haven't played the Spring remakes of TA.

As far as honorable mentions go, I'd put Dune II before Dune 2000 (yeah, the interface sucked compared to modern games, but hey, points for age). All later Westwood RTS games were just rehashes with different unit sets and the ability to select multiple units.

Morrowind was great. Oblivion was lame without mods.

What I liked about Morrowind was that you could do anything, even stuff that made it so that you couldn't win the game. I killed Vivec, and that King guy in Mournhold, I can't remember his name.

Morrowind was great. Oblivion was lame without mods.

What I liked about Morrowind was that you could do anything, even stuff that made it so that you couldn't win the game. I killed Vivec, and that King guy in Mournhold, I can't remember his name.

I'm an xbox player so I get no custom mods :( My favorite part of the game is where you had to cure your corpisism(?). I killed a Corpse so I couldn't get the potion, so I went up and attacked the guy XD all of my gear got destroyed in an epic battle, after about 3 days (in real life) of hand to hand I finally killed him. I went to go loot his body, no potion D: The one thing about Morrowind is sometimes when you went into that crab palace thing, you'd instantly died >.>

wow.. best of the best? There are so many great games...

I think Starcraft can be considered one of, if not the best game I've ever played though. Funny thing is, when it first came out I hated it. But what makes is so impressive is not really what Blizzard has done (besides their amazing support and patching) but what players have done with the game. Who would have thought that an old RTS could be so deep.

My vote goes to Ultima Online.
By todays standards it has cruddy graphics but for it to still last its got legacy.
Also many games try to imitate it, but non fully grasp the fun UO provided back in the day.

I haven't played many of the games mentioned in this thread-- even some of the well-known ones. I've heard of Spring, but I've never played it, so I can't really comment.

I didn't mention it because I forgot what it was called, but there was a Dune for Sega that I played and liked more than Dune 2000. Perhaps it was Dune II? It was the only console-based RTS I've really liked. It was actually the game that got me into RTS games. I'm still an addict :)

Supreme Commander was a huge letdown (including Forged Alliance). From what I've read about Starcraft 2, it is going to be at least as much of a let down. Starcraft is a part of Korean culture now... I just can't see them giving it up without a fight. They might have a chance if they don't screw with the LAN support.

I have to agree with the people who said the Civilization series. I love me some first-person action games (playing through both Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 right now), but Civ has been at the top of my rotation since the first one came out in the early 90s. The basic concept promises endless replayability, and each implementation has added fascinating new elements. The Beyond the Sword expansion for Civ IV is almost inexhaustible.

the mrs bought me this for christmas, but i haven't had much of a chance to play it, it was pretty impressive from what i played.

as for favourite games, i'm an rpg kind of guy.. in no particular order, i love

final fantasy series (pretty much all of them except x-2 & 11 which i haven't played, or 13 which i haven't played yet. favourites would be ff7 & ff10. 12 was great too)
ff tactics
chrono trigger (chrono cross was good too too, though it didn't match trigger)
tes: morrowind (got oblivion last year but haven't played it enough to comment)
star wars kotor 1&2
breath of fire series (3 on the ps was great. 4 had a better battle system but i think apart from that 3 was better)
wild arms series
shining force 2 (never played the others)
fallout 3
dark cloud 2
vagrant story

of the non rpgs, these would be my favs

civ series
championship manager 97/98 - the rest were good, but just didn't match the adictiveness of 97/98, nor the awsomeness of robbie keane ands neil lennon
tekken 3
gran turismo 2
gta vice city
fifa road to worldcup 98
pro evo series
super street fighter 2 turbo
pirates!
tiger woods series

hard to choose, but them all, if i was told i could only ever play one more game before i die, i'd choose ff7. provided i had about a month to play it of course

Pokémon Gold and Silver, my favourite instalment (generation) of the Pokémon series as a whole. Sure, later generations have further enhanced the gameplay, but there's just something about generation 2 of the Pokémon games that feels "timeless" to me. Probably the aesthetics in general - the chiptune music and graphics are great, certainly some of the best on the Game Boy. The gameplay itself is also fun, probably one of the best implementations of the basic formula of Pokémon.

In other words, it's refreshing in its simplicity, and an absolute joy to play, even now.

Probably the X-wing Collection (okay, technically that's several games). They would look horrible on my current monitor, if I could even get them to run, which I can't since they're DOS games. But man were they fun!

I've been hoping for years that Lucasarts or someone would release updated sequels, taking advantage of the advances in graphics & sound since the 1990's. Doesn't look like it's going to happen. The most modern Star Wars sim is X-Wing Alliance, which can be made to run on Windows XP with a little tweaking. Some folks are working on a graphical upgrade to it (X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project), and I understand there are still multiplayer servers for it, though I haven't tried that part.

That won't fix the horrid 320x200 w/8-bit color graphics. They were tolerable on a 15" monitor in 1994, when such was the norm in PC gaming. I'd probably suffer physical eye damage if I put that up on my 21" CRT.

Also I no longer have a joystick, and I've given up looking for a good one under $100. They don't seem to exist any more. That's for another thread.

I still haven't finished Oblivion, not because it was too hard, or anything. I just stopped playing it. While it looks 100 times better, it has a smaller world, less quest, less factions, and the story just isn't there for me. As you said no levitation!. Not that it's a bad game. Portal was three hours of pure gaming bliss, no other way to describe it.

The Mass Effect series has been fun so far; Goldeneye was the most fun I ever had with a shooter; Final Fantasy 7 was the most fun I had with an RPG, but it's been a while since a decent Final Fantasy was made (imo); and um Silent Hill 2 was the scariest game I ever played. There's a ton of other fun games but those are the ones that come to mind.

Oh and to the person that said Call of Juarez earlier, that game was way more fun than I thought it would be. And, I've played MMORPGs and put quite a bit of time into a few but none of them were ever fun, just numb entertainment... more like a job.

Weak singleplayer, but the multiplayer is far beyond any other game I've ever played.

Super Breakout on the Atari. I remember playing that game for hours on end as a kid. It came with a cool instruction booklet and the booklet contained a story about a space pilot travelling at light speed approaching a barrier. When ever I played that game I was the space pilot. Loved it.

I originally said Legend of Blacksilver on the C64.

But now I would have to say LOZ: Ocarina of Time, closely followed by Twilight Princess.

I finally got around to finishing Twilight Princess last week. Awesome game. I think it's even a little better than Ocarina of Time.

They're coming out with a new Zelda game this year, but I won't be able to play it because we're selling our Wii. That's the main thing I hate about getting rid of the Wii. We got a Kinect, which is amazing, but there's no replacement for Zelda.

I agree, I'm a big fan of civ IV! I tried 5 and I liked 4 much better. Although I think 5 will get better after the expansion packs.

Either The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Banjo-Kazooie for me.

I am leaning towards the latter, as I am a huge fan of platform/adventure games. Banjo-Kazooie had harmless humour, was vibrant, had brilliant level variety, transformations and general gameplay. I remember feeling really ill, and couldn't look at the TV screen for long, but I would still provide suggestions to my brother playing it.

Ocarina of Time also deserves a mention as nearly everything was perfect, from the horse riding, mini games, dungeons, bosses, sword fighting etc.

They're all way too different to compare.

In my previous message (from May 1, 2008...), I mentioned Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters as being a great game.

I would like to add: Anachronox. Highly under appreciated. The graphics have not aged gracefully, but the storyline remains fantastic.

I'd have to say Starcraft for myself, don't get much time to play games anymore but when I do it is almost always Starcraft. Haven't tried Starcraft 2 yet but might have to give it a go soon.
If I might ask, what do people thing of the second one? As good as the first?

XCOM UFO Defense / UFO Enemy Unknown.

Perfect storm of base management, hardcore tactical turn based combat, RPG elements, fully destructible environments, thick atmosphere, endless replay, doesn't waste your time with hours of pointless tutorial difficulty levels.

And best of all, ran on my amiga as well as on PC's.

Accept no substitutes.

Morrowind for PC, even though I first played it on the XBOX and will never forget turning that thing on, putting the disk in the tray and hearing the main theme for the first time.

Halo was pretty amazing at the time; I still run through the PC version once a year; and again, I first played it on the XBOX and like the console version more.

However, some of the best game experiences are far shorter than that. :P

I will have to agree with the OP; though I do not think Morrwind was the best... I personally liked Daggerfall... huge area and not a lot of restrictions on spell design.

You can download it and the original and play them under DOSBOX too.
